Jayne Holder (UTC Alumni Director), Norma Wilson (widow of inductee of Dr. Robert "Rock" Wilson), George McCoy, Russ Schoene, Kathy Kolankiewicz, Michal Kyle, Ralph Zigner and Greg Cater.
Tim Brennan – Wrestling – 1972-76
Tim Brennan was an NCAA Division II All-American for the Mocs from 1972-76. He earned his All-American honor by placing sixth at 167 pounds in the 1976 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Brennan helped the Mocs to a 15-1-1 dual meet record and a second place showing as a team at the 1976 NCAAs. UTC was third in 1975, posting a 19-1 dual meet tally.
Greg Cater – Football – 1976-79
Greg Cater was a three-time All-Southern Conference punter for the Mocs from 1976-79. He was the Scrappy Moore Team MVP Award winner as a freshman in 1976 when he posted a 44.2-yard average.
He earned his All-SoCon recognition in 1977, 1978 and 1979, while leading the league in punting all three seasons. His 44.2 career average is second on the Mocs all-time list, and he is also second in career punts (266) and punting yards (11,234).
Cater is one of just four individuals in league history to lead the SoCon in punting for three seasons. He was named to the Mocs; All-Century Team in 2003.
Following his collegiate career, Cater was selected in the 10
th round of the 1980 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He went on the play six seasons in the NFL with Buffalo (1980-83) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1986-87).
Kathy Kolankiewicz – Women’s Tennis – 1978-81
Kathy Kolankiewicz was a two-time All-American and a member of two AIAW Division II National Championship tennis teams for the Mocs from 1978-81. She earned he All-American honors when UTC won titles in 1978 and 1979.
In 1980, Kolankiewicz placed fifth in doubles at the NCAA Division I National Championships. As a senior in 1981, she was the singles and doubles champion in Division I at the Tennessee state championships.
Kolankiewicz went on to a storied career as head women’s tennis coach at the University of New Mexico (1986-09). She is the winningest coach in school history and a two-time conference coach of the year.
George McCoy – Football – 1926-29
George “Mac” McCoy was a standout out member of the Mocs football team from 1926-29. He was on offensive lineman and played guard most of his career.
He also lettered in basketball where he was captain of the team as a senior and a member of the All-SIAA squad.
An active alum after his playing days, he went on to become a popular head coach at Chattanooga’s Central High School
Russ Schoene – Men’s Basketball – 1981-82
Russ Schoene led the led the Mocs to two-straight Southern Conference titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1982. As a senior, he averaged 13.6 points and led the team with 7.0 rebounds a game.
Schoene led the Mocs to a 21-9 record, 11-5 in SoCon play, and their first NCAA Tournament in 1981. A second team All-SoCon selection in 1982, he guided UTC to a 27-4 record while and another SoCon title, while earning SoCon Tournament MVP Honors.
That UTC team claimed its first NCAA Tournament win with a convincing 58-51 victory over N.C. State. Schoene scored 15 and led the team with seven boards. He had 20 points in a one-point loss to Minnesota in the second round.
The Philadelphia 76ers selected Schoene in the second round of the 1982 NBA draft (45th pick overall), at the time highest draft pick in school history. He went on to play five seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia (1982-83), Indiana (1982-83) and Seattle (1987-89).
Dr. Robert Wilson – Meritorious Service
Dr. Robert Wilson was the long-time Chair of the Geology Department at UTC and known to most at the University as Dr. Rock. A big supporter of the Athletics program, he was omnipresent at UTC Athletics event.
He joined the University in 1955 and was a professor of Geology for over 35 years. He sponsored trips for geology students to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica and other geological destinations.
An anonymous donation in 1987 set up the Robert Lake Wilson Professorship. This endowment honored Dr. Wilson’s demonstration of a personal interest in the welfare of his students. It is intended to recognize and reward faculty who go out of their way to provide encouragement and support.
Ralph Zigner – Wrestling – 1976-78
Ralph “Ziggy” Zigner was an All-American wrestler for the Mocs from 1977-78. He earned All-American honors by placing fifth at heavyweight in the 1977 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Zigner is one of four Mocs to win three Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (SEIWA) titles in a career. He was also a Bronze Medalist at the 1977 World University Games in Sophia Bulgaria.
Zigner helped lead UTC into Division I competition and the Southern Conference in 1978. He won the SoCon title as a senior that year, while the Mocs took the team trophy.
