UTC Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1999

Chad Copeland – Men’s Basketball – 1993-94
Chad Copeland was the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as a senior in 1994.  He capped off a two-year career leading the Mocs to back-to-back SoCon regular season and conference tournament championships as well as back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Copeland sat out the 1991-92 season after transferring from Florida State but quickly established himself as one of the top scorers on the team as a junior.  In 1992-93, he was 39-82 (47.6%) from three-point range, the second-highest percentage from behind the line in school history.

His senior year, he became one of just four Mocs to average over 20 points per game, posting a 20.1 mark in 1993-94.  He was deadly from the free throw line, making a school-record 43 in a row at one point in the season.  He shot 206-230 (89.6%) from the stripe, the second highest percentage in school history.  He also had six-straight games with 20+ points to tie a school mark.  He is the only Moc with back-to-back 30 point games and led the team with 48 steals.    

Copeland was named the SoCon Tournament MVP after tying a school record with 76 points in three games.  For his career, he averaged 17.7 ppg and holds the career FT% mark at 88.9% (281-316). 

Junior Jackson – Football – 1986-89
Junior Jackson was the 1989 Southern Conference Coaches Defensive Player of the Year.  He was the first Moc to win a player of the year honor from the SoCon and is still third in career tackles at UTC with 454. 

Jackson earned All-American honors from the AFCA, Kodak and the Associated Press (2nd Team) as a senior in 1989.  In addition, he was the Scrappy Moore Team MVP and named first team All-SoCon. 

Jackson’s 181 tackles in 1989 are the third most in a season in school history.  He grabbed four SoCon Defensive Player of the Week Honors as a team captain that season. 

Jackson led the Mocs in tackles for three years in a row, including 87 in 1987 and 120 in 1988.  He also had a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Furman on Nov. 15, 1986.  In 2003, he was named to the UTC All-Century Team. 

Howard Langford – Wrestling – 1988-92
Howard Langford was an All-American wrestler for the Mocs from 1988-92.  He finished eighth at 158 pounds at the 1992 NCAA Championships.  He also qualified for the NCAAs as a freshman in 1989.  He won the Southern Conference title at 158 pounds in both 1989 and 1992.  His 24-1 record in 1992 is the third highest single-season winning percentage (.960) in school history. 

Dr. Frank Trundle, Sr. – Meritorious Service
Dr. Trundle served Chattanooga for over 50 years in various capacities.  He played basketball and football at UC from 1945-48 and was the school’s first scholarship athlete.  After graduating from UTC and from UT’s Medical School in Memphis in 1952, Trundle began his dental career.  He contributed his time and talents to the Mocs for 52 years and was a constant fixture on the football sidelines and in the basketball stands. 

Trundle was inducted into the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame and the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame and served on the boards of the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. 

An avid golfer, Trundle volunteered his time as club president of the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club and was a member of the Alhambra Shrine Jesters.  A World War II veteran, he participated in the Pacific Theater in Okinawa and Iwo Jima and the European Theater in Normandy and Southern France.

Trundle also earned the Southern Conference Distinguished Service Award posthumously in 2006.  He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.   

Tom Weathers – Football – 1958-61
Tom Weathers was a four-year letter winner and captain of the 1961 Mocs football team.  The Columbus, Miss., native joined the program as an end in 1958 and was one of the top receivers on the team throughout his career.  He also spent time on the track team, competing in the hurdles. 

Weathers is best known in the Chattanooga area as the long-time head coach of Red Bank High School.  He was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2019.  He served as assistant coach at 5 different schools before landing at Red Bank in 1973
In 29 years as head coach at Red Bank he won 222 games while only losing 85.  He left Red Bank in 2002 and went to Georgia for two years and then finished his career at Soddy Daisy High School from 2004 – 2007. 

Weathers won the TSSAA Class 5A State Championship at Red Bank in 2000 with a 15-0 record.  He has earned numerous Coach of the Year honors including TN Titans, TSSAA, and TACA.  He is a member of the Greater Chattanooga Sports, Chattanooga Old Timers and Tennessee Football Coaches Association Halls of Fame.  The field at Red Bank High School is named in his honor and he received TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1988.
