UTC Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1992

Jan. 28, 1992
UTC Athletic Director Ed Farrell and Hall of Fame committee chair Howard Sompayrac announced the members of the Class of 1992 MOC Hall of Fame. The inductees will be honored at a benefit for the UTC athletic department entitled "Evening of Champions" set for Mar. 31 in the UTC Arena.

At the "Evening of Champions" an award will be presented by pro football Hall of Famer Sam Huff in the memory of Joe Morrison, a former UTC coach who led the Mocs to three Southern Conference championships from 1973-79. Huff was a long-time friend of Morrison.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Rich Kotite will present a second award to Gordon L. Davenport, "a person in the community who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to Moc athletics over the years."
Twenty-eight new members will also be inducted into the expanded MOC Hall of Fame.

For the first time since its establishment, the Hall of Fame will include athletes and coaches from a variety of sports. Previously, only football players and coaches were honored in the Hall of Fame while basketball recognition was awarded with the induction into the circle of fame.

Tennis players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame include Tommy Bartlett, Phyllis Blackwell, Marilyn Voges Brown, George Dickinson, Elizabeth Henderson, Orlando Lorenco and Phillip Tuckniss.

Football inductees include Jacob Burney, Joe Lee Dunn, John Kovacevich and Bob Standefer.

The basketball representatives include Larry Barnett, Kevin Gray, Moose McGary and Karen Mills.

Wrestling inductees include Randy Batten, Tom Drake, Charlie Heard, Turner Jackson, Byron McGlathery and Jim Morgan.
Golf will be represented by Connie Day, Gibby Gilbert and Pier Morgan.

Willard "Pop" Keyser, Dr. Earl Campbell, John Grant and Alex Guerry will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame in an "at large" category established to reward those who have no direct university affiliation, but who the committee feels have brought honor to Chattanooga through their athletic achievements.

Members of the "Evening of Champions" committee are: Mrs. Marvin Berke, chair; Bert Caldwell, Roy Crowley, Doug Dyer, Bob Elmore, Terry Espeseth, Millie Fariss, Ival Goldstein, Delores Harvey, Linda Hendy, Judy Kleinstub, Steve Kurtz, Hal Morris, Nancy Marcellis, Howard Sompayrac, Harriettee Spiegel, Joel Susman, Dr. Joe Trahan, Ron Wade and John Witty.

Country music star Lee Greenwood will provide entertainment at the event.
