NIL FAQ
What does NIL stand for and what does it mean?
NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness—the right for student-athletes to profit from their personal brand through endorsements, sponsorships and business opportunities.
How will UTC support my NIL opportunities?
UTC provides comprehensive NIL support including dedicated staff guidance, personal branding education, access to our marketplace connecting you with local Chattanooga businesses, contract review assistance, financial literacy programs and one-on-one consultations to develop your NIL strategy. We'll help you navigate the new reporting requirements and ensure all deals comply with current regulations.
Do I need to report my NIL deals?
Yes. Student-athletes are required to disclose NIL deals over $600 through the NIL Go platform. Any deal in excess of $600 will be reviewed, with the potential for external arbitration if any disputes arise. Always report opportunities to our office before signing any deals to ensure compliance.
How do I get started with NIL at UTC?
Attend one of our NIL workshops, create your athlete profile on our marketplace, build your social media presence and connect with local businesses through our networking events. Make sure to report all deals over $600 through our compliance system before finalizing any agreements.
What types of NIL opportunities are available?
Common opportunities include social media promotion for local businesses, appearances at community events, autograph signings, brand ambassador partnerships, youth camp instruction and content creation.
Can I use UTC logos, uniforms, or facilities in my NIL deals?
College athletes must be careful not to use UTC's trademarked logos or names without permission. You may identify yourself as a "UTC student-athlete" or "UTC Football Player," but you cannot use official UTC logos, uniforms or conduct NIL activities in team facilities without prior written approval from the athletic department. Contact our NIL office before planning any deal involving university branding or locations.
Why should my business partner with UTC student-athletes?
Partnering with Mocs athletes provides authentic marketing through trusted local figures, access to the engaged UTC fan base, social media promotion to thousands of followers, community goodwill and cost-effective marketing compared to traditional advertising—all while supporting local student-athletes.
How much does it cost to partner with a UTC athlete?
Costs vary based on the athlete's following, sport and deliverables. Partnerships can range from a few hundred dollars for a single social media. Keep in mind that deals valued above $600 are subject to review through the NIL Go platform.
What are examples of compliant NIL deals?
Legitimate deals include social media promotion of your business, appearances at store openings or company events, autograph sessions for customers, brand ambassador partnerships, youth camp instruction or content creation for marketing campaigns. Deals must have a valid business purpose related to offering goods or services to the general public for profit and fall within the range of fair market value compensation. Contact our NIL office to ensure your proposed deal complies with all regulations.
How can I support UTC student-athletes through NIL?
You can support Mocs athletes by purchasing personalized merchandise through Athletes Thread, partnering directly with student-athletes through your business for promotional services (social media marketing, appearances, endorsements) or supporting the Dare and Do collective.
