McCay Mathis begins her second season at Chattanooga as the Athletics Counselor ahead of the 2024-25 season. Prior to UTC, McCay served as the Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling at Lee University from 2021-2023. At Lee, she was the embedded mental health service provider for all student-athletes while also developing and overseeing the Student-Athlete Development Department.
Before her tenure at Lee, McCay worked at the Carolina Center for Behavorial Health as an outpatient therapist. She also worked in the partial hospitalization program and intensive outpatient program providing group therapy, psychoeducation and case management to adolescent and adult patients. McCay is also a Licensed Clinical Worker (LCSW) in Tennessee and a Licensed Independent Social Worker-Clinical Practice (LISW-CP) in South Carolina.
McCay received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Furman in 2018. She then went on to receive her Master's in Social Work and a Graduate Certificate in Drug and Addiction Studies from South Carolina in 2020. While getting her Masters Degree, McCay did an advanced internship placement with the Director of Mental Health in the Athletic Department at South Carolina.
McCay is originally from Chattanooga and lives with her dog Harper. She enjoys reading, playing games, spending time outside and enjoying a good meal with friends and family outside of work.
