Head coach Matt McCallWas this how you wanted the team to respond after a big win on the road?"I constantly talk to these guys about fighting their circumstance. It would have been easy to be complacent, especially the last two days of practice. You're walking around here and everyone's telling you congratulations and how great you are, and the bottom line is you've won one game. We had to get back to work because it's a long, long season. So I talked to the guys a lot the last few days about fighting your circumstance.
"We really had to refocus and stay locked in on the next opponent and the next team that was in front of us and continue to get better with this whole process. I've been preaching process since the beginning and just the process of getting better. I thought for the most part they did that tonight. It was good to be able to basically get everyone into the game. Because I think we have quite the schedule these next two weeks. It was good to be able to play our bench.
"We set some goals in the game. I wanted to get over 20 assists. We did that. I wanted to hold them to less than 30 percent from the three-point line. We did that. I wanted to be plus 15 on the glass. We were. The one area we weren't great in is taking care of the basketball tonight. They were a team that pretty much played zone the entire game, so that was a little disappointing as a coach.
"For the most part, I was proud because I think one of the hardest things to do as a player or as a team is handle success. Having a win like that on the road, it was amazing how many people were by our bus when we walked out of the arena in Athens. Handling success can be a challenge but for the most part, our guys got refocused on what we had to do tonight."
On shooting well."They played zone the whole game pretty much. A lot of those three's are there because of the defense that they were playing. I wanted the guys to get a piece of the paint and play inside the out.
"I thought we missed
Justin Tuoyo some, especially early in the game in and around the basket, which we have to continue to get better zone offense wise. I think it's an area we've struggled a little bit, even in the Georgia game, so we need to get better there. The three's were there. We took 26 of them, made 12, that's 46 percent. You're taking that every single night out.
What is your process?"Our process is getting better every single day. That's what we're focused on. Sometimes teams write up goals and we want to do 'x,' 'y' and 'z'. We want to get better every single day. That's what I said at the half tonight. Take the score out of this right now. Are we going to get better in the second half? Are we going to get better defensively? Are we going to be better taking care of the ball? Are we going to get better on the break, finishing plays?
"The process for us is just focusing on that every single day of getting better, and we have to improve. We can't take days off to where we don't improve because we want to be playing our best basketball in January, February and March. "
On depth of bench."I thought early one when we subbed, I don't think the energy was great with those guys early. I thought it got better. Again, a team's playing zone. If
Peyton Woods gets a crack, he can knock it down. I think he's proven that over the last couple of games here. Part of the reason he's been able to have success, not just because he's a good shooter, but if you watch our bench when he lets it go, they all stand up. As a player, that gives you confidence that when your teammates are like that, and they get so excited when you shoot or let it go.
"That instills confidence in him. I think early on when he got on campus, even in June, July and August, he was kind of tiptoeing around a little bit, trying to find his way. And he's playing with an enormous amount of confidence. I attribute that to our team and how those guys react when he lets it go."
Justin Tuoyo, forward, juniorDo you focus on dunks coming into a game like this? "No, I just come in and focus on getting a win and making our team better anyway we can."
How do you feel you and the team responded after a big win on the road?"Our biggest thing this weekend was Coach McCall said to handle success. We know we had a big win on Friday, so our biggest thing was to turn the page and keep getting better. We did have practice and today we handled our success well. We're looking forward to Illinois."
How was it being a fan for a few minutes?"It's good watching them on the court together. We tease them every day at practice. To see them out there get a chance to hoop together and finally get the feel of a real college game, it felt great. Big
Rich Kalina, when he got his first dunk in a college game, I lost my mind. It felt good on the side lines. I'm proud of him. I'm really happy for him."
How important is it to get off to a good start going into the Illinois game?"This is what we've prepared for this summer. Coach McCall and Coach Crane looked ahead and saw that we were going to be gone for two weeks. Our workouts, our road games, Friday morning at seven in the morning in the field, we've prepared for this. So now we have the chance to finally do it. We'll be leaving on Friday. We're trying to get wins. We know it's going to be tough, but we're looking forward to it, Illinois on Saturday. We have a good group here, keeping our heads high going into battle."
Peyton Woods, guard, freshmanHow good does it feel to get some shots tonight?"I struggled during the scrimmage and in the exhibition game. As a shooter you can't let that get to you. You have to keep shooting, so that's what I
did. We worked all week. The ball went in tonight."
Do you see feel the team's reaction when your ball goes in?"I can hear it sometimes. You shoot a shot, and they all yell out three or something like that. I can't really see it because I'm focused on the rim, but I can hear it and see it after it goes in."
How do you and the team approach the game?"We play a lot of guys. We're a really deep team. Coach McCall says to be ready at all times. He says that to everybody that's on the bench. That's like the Georgia game. We had three guys in foul trouble the first half. No one really expected that, but you have to be ready at all times. You never know when your name is going to be called."Â
