Postgame Quotes vs. Radford - Dec. 22, 2015

Head coach Matt McCall
On getting the close win over Radford.
"Terrific team and job by Mike Jones. They have a lot of veterans that can hurt you in a bunch of different ways and that was a gutsy win by our guys, because they are a terrific team. You don't go into Georgetown and beat them, arguably one of the best teams in the country, and not be a good team. I would not be shocked if they are in the NCAA Tournament come March. That was a good win.

"I thought we overcame some stuff in the first half. We battled, we fought and we ended up going on a run there that got us an eight-point lead and then got a great look at three on the last possession of the first half. In the beginning of the second half, I thought they were playing harder. They were getting every loose ball and cut into the lead.

"That was what I wrote on the board there before the game, was that the hardest playing team is going to win the game. We compete every day in practice against each other, and this is like playing ourselves and our style of play. It came down to who was going to play harder, who wanted the win more and who was the more desperate team. I really felt like defensively we did a great job. We still got stops when we needed them and when we needed to get loose balls. It was a great win by our team."

On the 10-2 start.
"I think with our schedule that we played up to this point, as far as the teams we've played, I would put Radford in the same league of caliber as Dayton, Georgia and Illinois. With our schedule and our record now, I couldn't be happier and more pleased with how our guys handled everything up to this point."

On not giving up the lead in the second half.
"I subbed a couple guys in in the second half and I felt like that kind of got the momentum shifted in our direction. Anytime you start the second half, you miss a shot and they come down and score, it's amazing how the momentum shift happens. They came down and made a shot and you almost feel drained when you don't score. We have to improve on starting the second half stronger, but I'm proud that we continued to get stops and got the lead back."

How key was Justin Tuoyo's three-point play and Greg Pryor's four-point play?
"They were huge plays. Tuoyo's was huge and Greg's was even bigger with his shot. I've talked a lot to Greg about being fearless and I don't want to take that from him. He's got a lot of guts and that's why at Dayton with a three-point game, he gets a turnover, rises up on a break and makes his shots. A lot of guys don't want to take that shot, and I don't want to take that fearlessness away from him, because that is what makes him such a good player."

How have you had to change your coaching philosophy since Casey Jones' injury?
"I've said from the beginning that our depth needs to be our biggest strength. We have really good players in the starting five and we have really good players coming off the bench. When Casey went down, I did not change a lot as a coach because of his caliber and how talented of an offensive player he is.

"You're constantly thinking as a coach to run actions at him or for him, because he's so good at rising up and down and making difficult shots. I'll give our guys credit that since he's been down, the ball is still moving and people are playing unselfish. I want to get him back as fast as possible because of how much he will help our team, but I haven't had to adjust much at all and I don't think our players have had to either.

"The focus of rebounding the basketball was my biggest concern when he went down. I wanted to know if we can make up for the job he does rebounding the ball. You have a guy like Tre' McLean, who has upped his rebounds and Justin Tuoyo, who goes for nine tonight and had 12 last game. Those guys are doing a great job on the glass and that needs to continue."

On the team's defensive effort.
"I felt like we played the scout like we practiced. We knew exactly what our opponent's strength was by player, and we focused our defense around helping the helper because we knew they had a lot of drivers and knockdown shooters. So we just helped the helper and we did that a lot. We got good rotations and back side help on the white line, and we got a lot of steals."

On key points in the game and the four-point shot.
"I just play my game, and I don't think about the clock or time. I should probably pay attention to that more. Like Coach McCall said, I'm fearless sometimes. He gave me the shot. I work on the shot all the time. I took the shot, and I knocked it down. He fouled me, and I made the free throw. It's just another shot for me."

How often do you get scored on and you want to score on them immediately?
"Never, because I know basketball is a game of runs. Anytime your man can score or another man's man can score on you when you're in help, I don't think about immediately going back to score on my man because that's how you feed into what they want you to do."

"They want you to come down and try to get back at them and take a bad shot or force a shot. I've learned growing up playing this game that it's not about your man scoring on you. It's about your team and getting the best shot for your team at the time."

Johnathan Burroughs-Cook, guard, junior
Was there any conversation the team had when Casey Jones went down about stepping up?
"It was just mental. I knew when Casey went down I was going to have to step my role up a little bit more. Like Coach McCall said, we have a lot of players on our team that's talented. So if one person goes down we're always going to be good. I feel like that's our strength."

On the run in the second half where you never lost the lead.
"We just tried to keep everything in shape. When stuff's not going right we always try to keep our heads up and keep playing because we know basketball's all about runs. So they get their run, we're going to get our run, and we got the last run so that's how the game ended."
