Head coach Matt McCallOn win against The Citadel."Anytime you get into conference play, you're going to have to fight, scratch and crawl just to get wins. It's going to be like that every single night. With the style of game The Citadel plays, they can cause you all sorts of problems. We knew that going in, and obviously with 17 turnovers, we did not do a good job handling the press.
"I felt like we panicked a lot in the game, and I talked to our guys before the game about not panicking. That's how they want us to play. They want us to panic. With four minutes to go in the game, down six, I told our guys in the timeout, 'Listen, it's a two possession game. We need a score, a stop and a score.' We ended up getting I think five baskets and five stops down the stretch, which was ultimately the reason we were able to come out with a win.
"Games like this are good. The adversity in the game, that's how you grow as a team. I'm really just happy for our guys that we were able to pull out with a win."
On keys to playing The Citadel."Against this team you can't try to make homeruns. You need to hit singles, because of the way they make you play. If you try to make the highlight reel or the homerun play, you're playing into their hands. I felt like we did that too much. We kind of got caught up in the game and not possession-by-possession.
"I told our guys 'This is what it's about right now. Everyone needs to get out of themselves and play as a team and start focusing on what we have to do.' We got a little bit sidetracked and panicked a little bit. I felt like we were playing into their hands instead of us dictating what we want to do."
On The Citadel coming back after UTC would gain a lead."The Citadel made 13 three's in the game. We turn it over 17 times, and we still won. Obviously there's a lot we can learn from this that we need to get better on. If you're looking at the stats sheet, the reason we won the game is because we outrebounded them. At the end of the day, we did a great job on the glass. That's why we were able to win the game.
"We got to the free throw line. With how they press, you're going to be able to get to the free throw line a bunch. Especially down the stretch,
Greg Pryor did a great job of getting there and knocking down his free throws. We almost looked like we wanted it to be easy there at times, and it's not going to be, especially against teams like this with how they play. But I'm really proud of our guys. It would have been easy with 3:59 left to go, down six, to mail it in, and we didn't do that.
"I think
Eric Robertson got a steal and run-up dunk, and then we were able to get our defense set. It was a tough game to press in because they're so fast inbound, and they're so fast getting it up the floor. I have to do a better job as our coach playing against teams like this, when teams get it so deep, of still being able to utilize our press. It's difficult in a game like this."
What did you say at halftime?"Just be more aggressive, play off two feet. Get down the lane. Make the right play. Be strong with the ball. There were times when we were dribbling off our foot, even late in the game when they go up by six. That's panicking. That's not doing what we do. That's not being sharp and crisp and being disciplined, and that's what's key in a game like this. But down six with four minutes to go, to find a way to win, I'm extremely proud of our guys."
On Greg Pryor's performance in the last four minutes. He was great. He was great at the free throw line. He was great against the press. He needs to run our team and continue to run our team and be one of our leaders. I thought he did a great job, especially late in the game, with keeping everyone calm and going to the free throw line and making his free throws.
Greg Pryor, guard, juniorOn first conference game being tough."Every game in this conference isn't going to be easy. It's going to be a championship-like environment every night in this conference."
On being down by six with under four minutes left to play."Of course, nobody wants to be in that position, but we've been in this position a lot of times this season, in the middle of the game, at the end of the game, at the beginning of the game. We've adapted to overcoming those types of situations.
"When we get in those situations, we know that our points don't come from the defensive end. We have to come and get stops before we can think about anything else."
On back-to-back slams from Eric Robertson and Tre' McLean."Those two plays, they started on the defensive end. We got out on a break. It ignited the team, and we were able to take off with the lead."
On being frustrated throughout the game."Of course there's going to be frustration when you get in positions that you know you shouldn't be in, because we bring it upon ourselves. It wasn't a lot of things that they were doing that were putting us into that position. We turned the ball over a lot on our own. It was just careless mistakes."
Tre' McLean, forward, juniorOn being a really tough game."The Citadel played very well today. They made it tough on us. They didn't let us get into our offense and do what we normally do. We had to find a way. We had to make adjustments, and that's exactly what we did. We made it happen and came out with a win."
On having to be disciplined to come out with the win."Coach McCall told us it's all about our mentality. As long as we stay composed and find a way to play as close as we can to our basketball, we'd be fine. There were times where we kind of lost our composure and fell into The Citadel's game plan, but we found a way to adjust that at the right time and made a run."
On having a veteran team."We have some experienced guys. We've been here before. In order to win this game, we were going to have to make one more big push. That's exactly what we did."
