Jacob Kurtz was tabbed by Matt McCall in May 2015 as his first video coordinator. It was Kurtz’s first foray into coaching completing his playing career at Florida in 2014-15, but it led to his current role of assistant to the head coach.
In his first season, Kurtz helped the program back to the top of the Southern Conference. The Mocs won a school-record 29 games and captured the 11th regular season and tournament titles in program history while making the 11th NCAA DI Tournament appearance.
Kurtz was originally a walk-on for the Gators and is considered the most accomplished of the Billy Donovan era. It is an inspiring run for Oviedo, Fla., native who started his collegiate career as a manager in 2010-11.
After earning a roster spot in October 2011, he saw his playing time increase dramatically as a junior and senior. He started seven contest in 2014-15 becoming the first walk-on to open a game for UF since Dan Williams in 1997. Kurtz was named to the 2015 SEC Community Service Team and was a nominee for SEC Scholar-Athlete and Sixth Man of the Year.
He prepped at Hagerty where he was a two-time team captain and all-conference honorable mention in Seminole County. He led HHS in scoring (13 ppg), rebounding (9 rpg) and steals (2 spg) earning the squad’s defensive player of the year award his senior year.
