Wommack, Mayne Named Academic All-America

Chattanooga distance runners Shannon Wommack and Ian Mayne were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America List in the University Division by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Mayne graduated in May with a pre-med degree with a cumulative 3.86 GPA. He was the 2005 Dayle Maye Academic Achievement Award recipient. The award is presented to a current senior UTC student-athlete who carries the highest cumulative GPA. He served on the Student-Advisory Board for four years and was named to the Dean's List each semester he was at UTC. Mayne will start medical school in the fall at the University of Toronto.

Mayne, from Pickering, Ontario, was the Southern Conference Runner-of-the-Year after claiming the league cross country title, earning a spot in the NCAA Championships. He was the Indoor 5000 meter champion in 2006 with a time of 14:48.42. He also had the SoCon's top time in the 10,000 meters during the 2006 outdoor track season. Mayne was All-Southern Conference 11 times in his career. He holds the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase and won three individual conference titles and was on two cross country championship teams.

Wommack, a five-time All-American from Conyers, Ga., was named to the women's First Team. She carries a 3.70 GPA while working toward her doctorate in physical therapy.

Wommack is a nine-time Southern Conference Athlete of the Year in cross country, indoor track outdoor track with 20 league titles, eight school records and four conference records. She earned All-America status at both the 2004 and 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships with a pair of top-25 finishes. She earned track All-America honors in the 5000m race at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track Nationals and followed that with a pair of top-5 finishes in the 3000m steeplechase. Wommack finished third in the steeplechase 2006 NCAA Outdoor championships, the highest finish ever for a Chattanooga runner. Last month, Wommack was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Southern Conference.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a scale of 4.0), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school. Forty-six male student-athletes representing 37 different NCAA Division I institutions were honored. The women's teams honored 45 student-athletes from 42 schools were honored.

Prior to this year, seven Chattanooga student-athletes have been named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams. This is the second selection for both runners. Wommack was a First Team selection last year, while Mayne was honored on the Third Team.
