CULLOWHEE, N.C. ? Six different players found the back of the net and Western Carolina (8-7-0, 3-3-0) notched four first half goals to defeat Chattanooga (0-8-2, 0-3-1) by a 6-1 score in a Southern Conference women's soccer game in Cullowhee, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.
WCU got on the board early when Heather Dittmer connected for an unassisted goal with 4:21 gone by to make the score 1-0 Catamounts before Nikki Lombardo found Lauren Atkinson less than two minutes later for her first goal of the season, this one coming at the 6:14 mark, to increase the lead to 2-0.
Lombardo followed with her own goal at the 17:42 mark of the first half off of an assist from Shannon Fowkes for a 3-0 advantage. The Lady Mocs then held Western Carolina scoreless until 43:47 to play in the half when Liz Eichler notched the fourth goal of the half for the Catamounts to send the game to the half at 4-0.
After facing solid defense from Chattanooga at the start of the second half, Western Carolina got back on the board quickly as Rachael Shomper connected for her third goal of the season at the 60:19 mark and Jenny Matteson found the back of the net with 62:44 to play to make the score 6-0.
The Lady Mocs got on the board when freshman midfielder Chiemi Heil (Concord, N.C.) notched her first goal of the season at the 88:46 mark.
Chattanooga returns to action on Friday, October 19 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
