LINCOLN, Neb.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (3-4) wrestling team dropped a a 29-15 decision to Nebraska (1-0) in Lincoln on Thursday evening. The sixth-ranked Huskers proved too much for the Mocs where they have been strongest at positions 157, 165 and 174.
The match started at 157 where No. 19 Joey Knox dropped a major decision to No. 3 Jordan Burroughs, 17-7. Seth Garvin dropped his first match of the season to No. 5 Stephen Dwyer at 165, losing a 9-3 decision to give the Cornhuskers a 7-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Jason McCroskey suffered his first loss of the season at 174 to No. 3 Brandon Browne on a 12-6 decision. The Huskers followed with a 15-3 major decision at 184 by Levi Wofford over Kyle McKee and a fall by No. 4 Craig Brester at 2:45 over redshirt freshman Ethan Winel at 197 in what proved to clinch the match and stake a 20-0 lead.
True freshman Cody Sliger came close to getting the Mocs on the board in his first collegiate matchup losing a 5-3 decision to NU's Tucker Lane. Sliger took a 1-0 lead on an escape with 1:49 left in the second period and was tied 2-2 after two periods. A Lane reversal at 1:55 of the third provided the winning margin.
The two teams swapped forfeits at 125 and 133 with the Mocs getting six points from freshman Paul Garza at 125. Senior Steve Hromada missed the match by not making weight.
No. 4 Cody Cleveland dominated his match with Curtis Salazar at 141. After spotting Salazar a 3-2 lead after one period, Cleveland ran off six straight points to go up 8-3 before claiming a fall at 5:38. Dan Waddell closed out the match on a good note for the Mocs with an 11-4 decision over Brian Litch at 149.
The Mocs now travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Kaufman-Brand Open at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. The Kaufman-Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse, has been the nation's largest single-day collegiate meet in the nation for several years with more than 600 wrestlers from approximately 40 teams expected to compete.
