Box Score The men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to
Elon Saturday in its Southern Conference opener and had its
seven-match win streak snapped in the process.
Elon,
the defending SoCon champions, claimed two of three doubles matches
and five of six singles matches to take home the victory.
“Elon
is as good or better than they were last year,” UTC Head Coach
Carlos Garcia said. “We have some inexperience at the bottom of
the lineup, and we hope today's match will lead to better things as
the season progresses.”
Chattanooga
senior Razvan Axente kept the Phoenix from completing a clean sweep.
He was part of a winning doubles tandem and earned the Mocs' only
team point with a victory at No. 2 singles.
The
Phoenix, 6-3, 1-0, owned an early 1-0 lead after capturing the second
and third doubles matches. Axente and teammate Peter Sauska recorded
an 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles, defeating the team of Damon Gooch and
Philip Nemec.
Axente
defeated Oscar Podlewski at the No. 2 singles position, winning a
superbreaker in the third set. Axente won by a score of 7-6, 3-6,
10-7.
Elon's
Mason Schermerhorn handed Sauska his first singles loss of the
season. Schermerhorn was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Sauska at No. 3.
Other
singles winners for the Phoenix were Gooch at No. 1, Alberto Rojas at
No. 4, Nemec at No. 5 and Chase Helpingstine at No. 6.
The
Mocs, 8-2, 0-1, are back in action Tuesday hosting Mercer at 2 p.m.
