Mocs Run Away with Wire-to-Wire Win at Palmetto Intercollegiate

| By:

AIKEN, S.C.---The 17th-ranked Chattanooga men's golf team dominated the field at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, a part of the Cleveland Collegiate Championship Series.  The Mocs shot a two-over par 282 in the final round to finish at 850, 30 shots ahead of No. 30 Virginia Tech.

“It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne.  “This really validates our fall season.”

Junior Jonathan Hodge fired a three-under par 67 to capture medalist honors with a two-over par total of 212.  It was his second win of the season following a win at the CoCa-Cola Duke Classic.  Sophomore Fredrik Qvicker shot 68 (-2) to tie for second with the Hokies Jurrian vander Vaart and Elon's Jimmy Lytle at 213.

Virginia Tech was not the only ranked team the Mocs topped as No. 22 Penn State finished fourth at 890, 40 strokes behind Chattanooga.  Other notables include conference rivals Elon fifth (892, 42 shots back), Furman sixth (894, 44 back) and UNC Greensboro 10th (912, 62 back).

“After our struggles at UCF's tournament, this was a great statement,” added Guhne.  “We need to build on it at the Linger Longer later this week.”

Sophomore Derek Rende provided the Mocs their third top five finisher; coming in fifth at 214 (+4).  Sophomore J.T. Clendenin finished tied for 14th with a three-day total of 220.

Chattanooga posted five sub-par rounds in the tournament, one by each team member.  The other 14 teams and nine individual players combined for three.

The Mocs return to action March 14-16 at the Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Mercer at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
