Lady Mocs Drop 4-1 Decision to Spartans in SoCon Opener

| By:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Lady Mocs fell 4-1 to UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference opener Friday night at the North River Soccer Complex.

The Spartans controlled throughout the game, scoring three goals in the first half and adding a fourth in the second before the Lady Mocs could get on the board. UNCG tallied 20 shots on the night to Chattanooga's five and had 13 on goal. Chattanooga freshman keeper Allie Preston had eight saves and the team registered one.

The scoring started early for the Spartans who posted their 21st consecutive regular season SoCon victory Friday. Mary Kate Towne took a feed from Kelly Attayek with just 5:24 gone in the game to put UNCG on the board. Jen Rincon came in off the bench to grab the next two scores for the Spartans.

At the 22:38 mark, Rincon scored the first of her two goals with an assist from Leigh Riordon then rung up her next with an assist from Nicole Danford at the 37:25 mark. The 3-0 score would stand through halftime, but it wouldn't take long for the fourth goal to go up on the board.

Danford took a shot from the left near side and Preston saved the shot, but couldn't hold on to the ball. Attayek took the deflection and passed it back to Danford for the score.

Chattanooga got on the board to avoid a shutout on a goal from Chelsea Hurst at the 84:33 mark. Marlee Jenkins, on a corner kick, passed the ball to Hurst who fired a shot from 30 yards out on the left side that deflected off a defender before finding the net.

The Lady Mocs fall to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 in league action while the Spartans improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon. Chattanooga will host Elon Sunday at 2 p.m. at the North River Complex. Admission is free.
