Lady Mocs Defend Title at Chris Banister Classic

GLENCOE, Ala.---The Chattanooga women's golf team dominated the field in record-setting fashion capturing its second straight Chris Banister Classic title at Spring Lakes Golf Club in Glencoe, Ala. The Lady Mocs shot a 14-over par total of 878 to top last year's tournament record mark of 885 (+21).

Also for the second straight year, the Lady Mocs had the low medalist for the event. This year sophomore Emma de Groot shot two-over par 218 with rounds of 76, 70 and 72 to tie Jacksonville State's Ashley Cox before claiming the win on the third playoff hole. Her second round score of 70 (-2) tied for the low round of the tournament with teammate Christine Wolf among others.

It was a definitive team win for the Lady Mocs with four players finishing in the top 10 and all five competitors in the top 20.

“We did what we set out to do,” said Head Coach Colette Murray. “One, we wanted to defend our title. Two, we wanted to break our record. It was a very satisfying effort.”

Wolf, a sophomore, finished in third just one shot out of the playoff at 219 (+3). Junior Kayla Stewart came in sixth at 221 (+5), while freshman Maria Salinas carded a 225 (+9) to finish ninth in her first collegiate action. Fellow freshman Maria Juliana Loza made it five in the top 20 tying for 18th at 231. Junior Katie Taylor played as an individual completing the 54 holes in 46th (248).

Chattanooga had six par or better rounds for the tournament, three times the total of its closest competition. The Lady Mocs are off until Sept. 26-28 when they travel to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship hosted by Vanderbilt at the Legends Club of Tennessee.
