Postgame Quotes

Chattanooga 70 ? Davidson 92

McKenzie Arena ? Chattanooga, Tenn.

Jan. 28, 2009

Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman

Opening Statement:

“Disappointed, disappointed, disappointed. We didn't play very well.  We battled our tail ends off at the first half and cut it to 8, but really what it comes down to is missing a 2.5-footer and they make a 75-footer.  We just lost to a very good basketball game, but if you aren't on you're “A” game you aren't going to win it.  We will be back, we had a great meeting.  I will not sit here and tell you that our season is over.  We are 5-5 and first place in the north.  I am not happy with how we got to our position, but we are there.”

“You just never know what is going to happen in this game.  This game is funny, how the dynamics work, you just never know.  We will take a day off tomorrow and have a great practice Friday. We are going to get fresh and be ready to go.”

What did you think when you saw Stephen Curry's shot right before the half?

“I'll tell you, I knew that shot was going in; I watched it and wasn't shocked.  What that guy [Curry] does won't shock me.  I have seen that guy do crazier things, he is just unbelievable. You just have to respect him and move on.”

“I felt like tonight was just not the night, when you miss 2.5-footer and they make a 75-footer.  I don't think the nets moved [sarcasm], but we just weren't on our game tonight.  You come up here sit, and try coach that.  You just can't coach that!”

Did Stephen McDowell try to match Stephen Curry?

“I am going to take the blame on that.  He wasn't matching Curry. He is like Doaks and tries too hard sometimes. It isn't easy going out there at home knowing what is waiting for you.  It is easy to throw jabs at us sometimes, but just walk in their shoes, I am proud of them.”

What is your opinion of Stephen Curry?

“You double ball screen him, he splits it and leaves two behind. He scored 32 points and I think we did a pretty good job on him tonight; he scored more than that at Davidson.  He is like the lottery pick, playing in the southern conference.  He is such an advance thinker, he was in the womb thinking about how to make this play and that play.  His team is getting used to playing with him now, which is scary.”

“I mean we were in a soft rotation, just to get the ball out of his hands so someone else would have to shoot.  We don't fear him, we respect him. I have known him since he was a little kid, he doesn't mouth off out there, and you just have to respect him.  He is a great kid and plays the game.”

Chattanooga Players:

Senior Nicchaeus Doaks

Thoughts on the game...

“They came out and worked hard the whole game.  We just didn't make our shots.  We weren't defending as well as we could.”

What about Stephen Curry's shot before half time?

“That shot of his, right before half got the crowd going and it took a little of our energy.  You see shots like that on ESPN, but this time it just happened to be on our team.”

Senior Kevin Goffney

Thoughts on the game...

“All our shots weren't falling like we wanted them too. This game didn't effect us any, we just got beat tonight.  They are a great team with a special teammate, but we will see them again.  We could make excuse after excuse, but they know it and we know it, we are going to see them again.

What about Stephen Curry's shot before half time?

“His shot did nothing to my energy, but I didn't expect it to go in”.

Stephen McDowell

Thoughts on the game...

“We all depend on each other to make plays and you feel like you are letting the team down when you don't make the shots.”

Davidson Head Coach Bob McKillop

Opening Statement:

“This was an exciting basketball game in a terrific town.  It is such a great city, Chattanooga.  It was just a magical night.  Stephen Curry was the catalyst for us in the second half that got us energized.  Stephen's three was a big factor.”

How was Chattanooga's defense?

“They do a wonderful job. Coach Shulman does wonderful offensive sets, he gets players to distribute.  It is always a chess match win playing them because they have such thought-out sets.”

How was Andrew Lovedale's game tonight?

“He has become more polished.  This is a result of confidence which started last year as we won 25 straight games, especially in the tournament. I felt when we started the season he felt a little overwhelmed, but since he came back from Christmas he as been feeling very confident and performing.”

Davidson Junior Stephen Curry

What do you think about your shot tonight?

“The guys are jumping, we practice that in practice sometimes and I saw it and just took it.  We try and get big going into the locker room and that is one thing to get everyone excited and upbeat.  That is the farthest I have ever hit a shot.”

Is it a neat feeling to have these crowds coming out see you?

“It is fun, definitely a special thing.  Shows we have done something right these past 2 years. We have played in front of these type of crowds before but, It is fun have these kind of crowds.  We go out to be competitive, and enjoy these type of games.“

Davidson Senior Andrew Lovedale

How would you say you have improved over the past year?

“So far so good, I think it is a hard thing.  I feel like I am a lot healthier and I am starting to get my confidence back, we do it everyday in practice and it is beginning to show on the court.  Overall tonight I thought we played ok, but I still made some mistakes.  Offensively I tried to rush balls as I came into the

No matter how well we play, we always go back and try to focus on the things we did wrong so we can see how to get better and move forward.”

Do you get bored when you are 20 up?

“No, on defense we had some let downs, but you can't have that mentality. You have to focus on finishing and having fun with your team.  We still take pride in our defense and boredom can't come into play.”
