STATESBORO, GA. - The Chattanooga Mocs dropped its second game of the season, 30-20, at Georgia Southern tonight. UTC could not overcome a cold and rainy night, combined with a strong performance by the Eagles, and fall to 4-2 on the season.
The Mocs running game was already slowed with the news earlier in the week that starting tailback senior Bryan Fitzgerald would need surgery on his injured foot, ending his collegiate career. Georgia Southern's defense made it even tougher, holding UTC to a season-low 33 yards on the ground.
The Eagles improved to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga moves to 2-2 in league action.
GSU opened scoring in the first quarter by taking the ball 60 yards on eight plays on its first drive. Adam Urbano reached the end zone on a nine-yard run to put GSU up 7-0. The Mocs' first drive stalled after seven plays, but the UTC defense stepped up on its second time on the field.
Senior LB Joseph Thornton forced a fumble by Urbano on third-and-short that was recovered by sophomore DB Jordan Tippit. Chattanooga took a shot at the end zone on the offense's first play back on the field that resulted in a 32-yard strike from sophomore B.J. Coleman to junior Chris Pitchford. The 7-7 score held for the remainder of the first period.
Rain and a heavy mist picked up for the rest of the opening half, making for a slick football and slippery conditions on the field. The Mocs had a difficult time running the ball, posting -4 yards on the ground in the first half.
Georgia Southern took the lead again with a 20-yard field goal by Adrian Mora with 10:50 left in the half. UTC forced another fumble later in the quarter that led to a game-tying 40-yard field goal by Craig Camay with 22 seconds left in the half. GSU got a good return on the ensuing kick-off that helped to set-up a 45-yard FG by Mora, giving the Eagles a 13-10 lead at the break.
The Mocs tied the game at 13 on the opening drive of the second half with a 23-yard field goal from Camay. The Mocs got to the GSU six-yard-line on an 18 completion from Coleman to Pitchford. However, three consecutive incomplete passes led to Camay's second field goal of the game.
Georgia Southern would go onto to score 17 unanswered points the rest of the way to put the game out of reach. Coleman hit freshman Terrance Davis for an eight-yard strike with 1:16 left in the game to round out the scoring.
Coleman finished the game 23-40 for 208 yards and two touchdowns while freshman Chris Awuah had 41 yards rushing on 10 carries. Senior Blue Cooper caught seven passes for 60 yards. UTC's defense was led by senior Joseph Thornton and Tippit's 12 tackles. Senior Josh Beard took over the SoCon lead with two sacks in the game. He now has 7.5 on the season.
Chattanooga will conclude its three-game road trip at Elon next weekend. The Mocs return to Finley Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31, to host Western Carolina at 2:00 p.m. For tickets call the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627) or purchase online at GoMocs.com.
