GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Lady Mocs dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
"It's heartbreaking that its another 1-0 game," UTC Head Coach J.D. Kzyer said "We had opportunites, but we just can't get past that yet. We've got a great future ahead of us."
UNCG's Kristin Player scored the only goal of the game just before halftime. The play started at midfield with Stephanie Partenheimer tapping the ball back to Lauren Lopez. Lopez then lofted a perfect pass into the box to Player who redirected it without breaking stride for her seventh goal of the season.
"It was an unbelievable goal," Kzyer said. "It wasn't a lucky shot. It was a great run through and a beautiful athletic goal."
The Lady Mocs fall to 6-6-1 overall and are 1-6-1 in league play with five losses coming by just a one-goal margin.
Bad news for the Lady Mocs was the loss of reserve keeper Sydney Dewberry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) who was lost for the season after colliding with a UNCG player. She made three saves in 16:29 and did not give up a goal in her first collegiate start.
"Sydney came in against Elon and played a great game for us," Kyzer said. "Taylor [Davidson] has been great for us and saved us in many games, but it was just time to give Sydney a chance. We're lucky that we have two really strong keepers and that both of them are freshmen."
Davidson (Ooltewah, Tenn.) had five saves in the game playing 73:31 in goal.
League-leading scorer Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was held scoreless Sunday, but got off five shots with one on goal. Sophomore Donna-Kay Henry (Queens Village, N.Y.) returned to the lineup after sitting out against Elon and added three shots to the offense.
The Lady Mocs will return home to close out the season with three games beginning with Davidson on Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the North River Soccer Complex. Live stats will be available at GoMocs.com.
