Soccer Battles Western Carolina to Double-Overtime Tie

| By:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Two own goals in the final three minutes of regulation led to a double-overtime tie between the Lady Mocs and Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the North River Complex.

With the game tied at two and time winding down, the Lady Mocs sent a direct kick toward the goal. The ball deflected off a Catamount player and Western Carolina's keeper into the goal to put Chattanooga up 3-2 with 2:13 to play in regulation.

Western Carolina quickly got the ball back to their end of the field and took advantage of a corner kick and  another hodgepodge of players in the net the ball deflected off a Chattanooga player and into the goal for the tie with just 17 seconds to play.

In the two overtime periods, each team got off four shots, but neither could find the net and the Lady Mocs netted their first tie of the year and move to 6-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league action. The Catamounts are 5-3-4 overall and 2-0-2 after tying Samford in a double-overtime affair Friday night in Birmingham, Ala.

Chattanooga's Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) struck quickly netting the first goal of the game in the second minute on an assist from Donna-Kay Henry (Queens Village, N.Y.), but the lead would be brief when WCU's Bri Cunningham scored her second goal of the year with 5:19 gone in the game. Henry took a pass from Anna Cusick (Norcross, Ga.) from the left and gave the Lady Mocs a 2-1 lead just before the half with her sixth goal of the year.

Western Carolina knotted it up just after the start of the second half on a goal from Renee Anderson from Rachael Schomper.

The Lady Mocs outshot Western Carolina 16-15 with a 10-7 shots on goal advantage. Chattanooga keeper Taylor Davidson (Ooltewah, Tenn.) had four saves in the game and Western Carolina's Katie Jacobs, who came into the game in relief in the first half, had six saves.

The Lady Mocs will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., Wednesday, Oct. 8 to take on Wofford in conference action.
