Chattanooga 77 ? College of Charleston 86

McKenzie Arena ? Chattanooga, Tenn.

Feb. 23, 2009

Chattanooga Head Coach: John Shulman

Opening Statement:

“Number one: it doesn't feel like we just one the north division, but we did!  Second: It looked like we were out there in quicksand tonight, mentally and physically.  It looked like we have no juice and we were too emotional.  These kids had their families there tonight and they are emotional.”

“They played athletic and they were ready to go.  We had a battle Saturday, they didn't.  They were out there with fresh legs and we simply weren't that way. They have great offensive players; give them a lot of credit.  They are a very talented group of kids.”

“I wouldn't mind having another opportunity to play them again.”

“I honestly think it was a great wake-up call for us though tonight. The season isn't over and they are a really good team.”

How was tonight a wake up call?

“We either get a wake up call now, or we get it March 6 or 7th, and I would much rather be getting it now. We have to just simply get better, defensively, offensively, boxing out.  It was so funky playing Samford Saturday; we had to change how we played then, and didn't change it back for tonight.  We will have a great practice on Wednesday and be ready to go. We probably needed this actually. The season is not over.”

On Zack Ferrell getting his first career start:

“I was at church yesterday and honestly thinking about starting all 6 of them, just go ahead and get a technical.  I decided I was going to start our original five, unless I heard from some of the seniors. Today Keyron [Sheard] text me and said that Zack deserves to start.  He has been here four years and I have been for two.  Then Nicchaeus [Doaks] text me too, and they both told me Zack was starting for them; he deserved it.”

Chattanooga Players:

What are your thoughts on the game tonight?

Nicchaeus Doaks: “We had no defense tonight, and they are a great team. They all scored and are one of the best teams in the conference.  We didn't play very well even though we scored 77 points, we just didn't stop them tonight.  It was a wake up call, but I would rather lose now then in the tournament.  We can fix it now; we can't fix it while we are in the tournament.”

“It comes down to who makes the most shots and makes the stops. They just did it!”

Kevin Goffney:  “Our defense was bad, we gave up offensive rebounds.  It was just a bad night for that to happen but they are a good team.  The officials let us play and didn't call a whole lot, its going to be physical like that in tournament time.”

“We know that we are going to have to go back and work on some stuff. Losing is not good but tonight was a good night for us we know what we need fix before we get there. If we play like this in the tournament we will be out.  We want to get to the big show and in order to get there we have to defend. Shots are not going to just fall like that in the tournament.”

Khalil Hartwell:  Tonight we were battling against each other smacking it away from each other.  They got a lot of loose balls and that killed us.”

Do you know that you are first in the North division and how does it feel?

Nicchaeus Doaks:  “It feels good to win it, but it feels like we gave this one away tonight, but we aren't just worried about wining the north, we want to win the SoCon tournament.  It would feel better to be in first if we had won tonight; right now we are just down about the game.”
