Lady Mocs Look to Rebound at Frost Classic

2009 Frost Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga softball team returns home after a long and treacherous road trip where the team went a disappointing 1-9. This weekend the Lady Mocs (5-11) are set to host the 16th Frost Classic in what begins a nine-game home stand for UTC. This season's classic features a record 15 teams including in-state rivals UT Martin and Tennessee Tech.

This past weekend the Lady Mocs saw more production from its offense, which had struggled in previous weeks. Lauren Flores snapped out of her early-season slump with a few extra-base hits and Toni Hutchison hit her team-leading fourth home run. In the circle, Michelle Fuzzard had two outings where the sophomore pitched well, but was unable to get the run support needed to secure victories. Fuzzard had an ERA of 1.62, allowing only five hits and striking out seven in 13 innings against James Madison and South Carolina.

This weekend the Lady Mocs will square off against Dayton, Princeton, Valparaiso, Boston College, Sacred Heart and UT Martin.

Scouting the Flyers
Dayton enters the weekend off a tough weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas, where the Flyers (2-7) went 0-5. As a team, Dayton is hitting a respectable .281. Molly Meyer, Katie Jordan and Anne Maci have been an offensive wrecking crew for UD. The trio is hitting .408 with 13 RBI.

The Flyers will look to Eva Rappe for their pitching needs. Rappe is 1-4 with a 5.30 ERA.

Scouting the Tigers
The Frost Classic will mark the beginning of the 2009 season for the Tigers. Last season Princeton went 25-24 and advanced to the program's eighth NCAA Tournament.

This year the team returns All-American Jamie Lettire. Last season as a sophomore, Lettire hit .340 with 14 RBI and earned Ivy League Co-Player of the Year honors.

Scouting the Crusaders
Like Princeton, Friday will usher in a new season for Valparaiso. Last season the Crusaders set a school-record with 30 wins and led the nation in stolen bases per game, averaging 2.57 per contest.

Ashley Wolter returns to VU for her senior season after leading the team with a .324 batting average and 30 RBI.

Scouting the Eagles
Boston College comes to the Scenic City in hopes of snapping a three-game losing streak. This season the Eagles are 4-6 and have been led Amy Tunstall with a .393 batting average.

Taylor Peyton is BC's leading hurler with a 1.06 ERA. The right hander has also accounted for all five of the Eagles' complete games.

Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart remains in the Deep South for the second straight weekend after joining UTC at the Gamecock Invitational last week in Columbia, S.C.  The Pioneers (0-4) were unable to pick up the season's first win however, dropping all four contests.

Shannon McCoy leads the team with a .333 batting average and has belted the team's lone home run.

Scouting the Skyhawks
UT Martin comes to the Frost Classic as a 10-3 team with a .331 team batting average. The Skyhawks have won five of their last six with Laura Roberts leading the way.

Roberts is hitting a robust .472 with a team-leading 16 RBI. The team has also been a pest on the basepaths, stealing 23 bases in 2009.
