Chattanooga Mocs Football - Postgame Quotes
Furman at Chattanooga
Finley Stadium Davenport Field - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sept. 12, 2009
UTC Head Coach Russ Huesman
On the game:
"I told our guys in the locker room I thought we played hard. We can't turn the ball over, we can't make mistakes in the kicking game and expect to win right know. Someday I think we will have our program in a spot where you make a mistake and you can overcome it. Right now we are not there yet. Our kids played hard, we have some warriors. We are going to win games this year; there is no question about it, we have a good enough football team."
"I give Furman credit they played hard. They are young on defense and those kids fought hard, they are really good on offense. I thought defensively we played much better during the second half. I told our defense in the locker room the second half is how we are going to play defense around here and, I was proud of them."
"I thought we could come back. When we were down 14-0 I wasn't worried. I thought we could come back. I thought we could move the ball and we did. I thought Fitz ran great. It's tough, against good football teams when you get down 14-0 it's a big hole to dig."
On the second half:
"I hope people saw that we are not quitting I didn't care what the score says. I didn't care if we lost 45-13. We were doing things to get points on the board and to get the ball back. We were taking chances, I didn't care, and I wanted to get the ball back. I wanted our kids to know that we are going to keep fighting every second there is a tick on the clock and that is what we did."
On Craig Camay's on-side kick to start the game:
The onside kick is so hard to defend. We should have had the second one; I don't think we executed it right. Camay kicks that thing and we have a 70-30 chance to get it. We have a better chance of getting it than they do every time. Camay did a great job.
Furman Head Coach Bobby Lamb
On the game:
"It was a game of up and downs and we just had more ups than Chattanooga had. I was disappointed by the way we ended the game, but we are certainly happy. It is a very happy locker room tonight. We got conference win number one but I wish we had just finished the game off a little better."
On the consistency of the offense:
"In the first half we ran the ball extremely well. Chattanooga made some adjustments at halftime and we didn't adjust enough on the sidelines. We couldn't get anything rolling in the second half, but our defense really stepped up. I was very proud. It was a game of offense and defense. The guys have got to step up, and certainly, we had big plays on both sides of the ball. We are happy to get out of here with a win."
On the mood of the players:
"The team is very excited. This team has a different outlook. We play the Missouri Tigers next weekend and we have nothing to lose. We are going to go out there next week and let it all hang out, turn it loose and play some good Southern Conference football."
On game plan for Chattanooga:
"Chattanooga has one of the best quarterbacks around. In the first quarter we really tried to come at him with some blitzes. In the second half we settled down, rushed four, and played a little bit of coverage. We made them drive the length of the field. We gave up a field goal and one big play, but after that we really settled in."
