ROCKY FACE, Ga.---It was not the final round it envisioned as the Chattanooga men's golf team finished second at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm Sunday afternoon. The Mocs shot 288 to finish at one-under par 863, 12 shots behind Tennessee.
The Vols shot 14-under par 274 to end the 54-hole event at 851 (-13). Georgia Tech finished third at three-over par 867 after a final round 282 (-6).
The Mocs held a three-shot lead at the turn going out at five-under par, while the Vols played the front side at four-under par. But the Vols made an outstanding run on the back nine shooting minus 10 to run away with the title.
"You have to take your hat off to Tennessee," said Mocs head coach Mark Guhne. "We didn't play as well as we'd like, but they were very strong today and earned the win.
"I am very happy with this start for our team," added Guhne. "It is definitely something to build on."
Sophomore Stephan Jaeger led Chattanooga shooting a final round 71 (-1) to finish tied for third at 211 (-5). Seniors Fredrik Qvicker and Derek Rende both shot even-par 72s. Qvicker tied for 17th at 217 (+1), while Rende finished a stroke back tied for 20th at 218 (+2).
True freshman Steven Fox had an impressive first collegiate start. Fox finished tied for 24th at 220 (+4), while senior J.T. Clendenin was solid in tying for 33rd at 222 (+6).
Texas Tech's Nils Floren and Tennessee's Darren Renwick tied for medalist honors at six-under par 210, one shot ahead of Jaeger and two others.
Following the Vols and Mocs in the standings were Georgia Tech (867), Auburn (870), South Carolina (872), Alabama (875), Wake Forest (875), Texas Tech (876), Clemson (884), East Tennessee State (892), Georgia (892) and Ole Miss (899).
The Mocs return to action Sept. 27-28 at the PING/Golfweek Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Seattle, Wash. The field will play 36 holes on the 27th followed by 18 on the 28th.
