MACON, Ga. --- It was a good tournament for the young University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finishing sixth at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside. Chattanooga shot 872 (+8) finish one stroke ahead of Clemson in seventh.
It was a consistent effort for the Mocs with rounds of 292, 291 and 289. That said, it was just short of being a special tourney for a team that features a junior, sophomore and three freshmen.
"We were so close to competing for the title against teams with a lot more experience," said head coach Mark Guhne. "It's not a crutch or an excuse, but just the opposite. It really excites me to know how close we are to being really, really good.
"If we can keep getting better like we are, this spring is going to be a lot of fun."
Sophomore Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) recorded his second top 10 of the season ending up tied for eighth at three-over par 213 after today's 71 (-1). That matches Fox's top 10 total from last season in just four events this year.
True freshman Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued his steady play to open 2010-11 with a tie for 21st with a two-over par total of 218. His 71 (-1) today moved him a stroke ahead of junior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) who wound up tied for 25th at 219 (+3) with a final round 74 (+3).
Redshirt freshmen Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) tied for 50th with matching scores of 227. Weilguni carded a 73 in today's round, while Robb had the drop score of 78.
Georgia claimed the team title with a seven-under par total of 857. The Bulldogs held off a final round charge by Augusta State which shot -13 on the day, 275, to end up a stroke back at 858 (-6).
UGA's Russell Henley defended his medalist honors with a matching 10-under par 206 as last year. ASU's Carter Newman was second, four strokes back at 210 (-6).
The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate is next on the schedule for the Mocs. It is played next weekend, Oct. 15-17, at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
