CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team came back from a 10-point first half deficit to claim a 35-27 win over No. 18 Georgia Southern at Finley Stadium Saturday evening. Chattanooga (4-2/3-1) won its fourth straight game, three consecutive in the Southern Conference, doing so in front of the second largest Mocs crowd in history, 17,414 for Homecoming.
The four wins in a row are the most since 1997. The three straight SoCon wins also last occurred in 1997. It is also the second straight Homecoming win over a ranked opponent for UTC.
It was another balanced attack for the Mocs with 195 yards rushing and 159 passing. Over the last two weeks, Chattanooga has sweated out 417 yards on the ground, with both games coming against rush-oriented teams.
The Eagles posted 391 yards of total offense, with 255 coming from its vaunted ground game. The Mocs defense was stellar in the second half. After allowing 198 yards rushing to GSU in the opening half, UTC limited the Eagles to just 57 in the second.
The Mocs boasted a solid one-two punch in the running game as true freshman Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Erroll Wynn (Jonesboro, Ga.) combined for 165 yards on 31 carries. Williams had 90 yards on 16 carries, with 64 yards coming in the fourth quarter. Wynn had 75 yards on 15 rushes.
B.J. Coleman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) garnered 159 yards in the air, completing 11 of 21 attempts with two touchdown connections and no interceptions. Coleman found tailback Chris Awuah (Marietta, Ga.) for 46 yards for the Mocs' first score in the first quarter and Brian Sutherland (Smyrna, Ga.) for 43 yards with the final tally in the fourth. Coleman also ran 11 yards for a score.
Tobi Akinniranye gained 102 yards rushing to lead Georgia Southern on the ground. Jaybo Shaw threw for 136 yards and one score, while rushing for 58 and another touchdown.
It was a quick start for the Eagles, scoring on the first possession of the game on a 37-yard field goal by Adrian Mora with 9:49 left in the first quarter. UTC answered on its next possession. Coleman marched his charges down the field going 70 yards in six plays, with the key coming on a pass interference by the Eagles on third-and-10 at the Mocs 30. Five plays later, Coleman hit Awuah from 46 yards out on a double play action fake to give UTC an early lead.
GSU came back with a long scoring strike of its own from 58 yards from Shaw to J.J. Wilcox. Early on it looked like whoever had the ball last would win.
After a Mocs punt, Georgia Southern quickly drove 80 yards in six plays with yet another big play. This one came via the legs of Akinniranye bursting 60 yards through the middle of the UTC defense and outlasting the pursuing secondary to push the Eagles to a 17-7 advantage. It was the longest rush the Mocs have allowed this season, and the 10-point deficit was the biigest UTC has faced this year.
Chattanooga was not deterred. The Mocs moved the ball 56 yards with Wynn scoring from a yard out to close to 17-14. The senior tailback had 35 of the 56 yards on seven carries keying the touchdown.
The Eagles took the air out the ball, literally, to end the first half. Taking over with 5:32 remaining in the half, GSU methodically moved into field goal range to cap a strong first half. Mora's 33-yard kick gave the Eagles a 20-14 advantage at the break. It marked the first time UTC trailed at intermission this season.
Chattanooga made some adjustments in the locker room and looked like a different team in the second stanza. UTC's opening drive was its longest play-wise of the season. Coleman took advantage of a GSU special teams miscue to bull his way into the end zone from 11 yards out as Chattanooga re-took the lead for good at 21-20.
As Jeff Veres (Thompson Station, Tenn.) narrowly missed a 40-yard field goal attempt, holder Sloan Allison (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was crushed on the attempt, giving new life to the 17-play drive with the roughing-the-holder call. Coleman scored on the very next snap, ending a nine-plus minute drive to open the period.
The defense came up big on the Eagles' ensuing possession. On third-and-one, Chris Donald (Huntingdon, Tenn.) forced a fumble on Robert Brown's rush, and Chris Lewis-Harris (Smyrna, Ga.) pounced on it at the GSU 25. Four plays later J.J. Jackson (Marietta, Ga.) scored his first career touchdown from three yards out, making it 28-20 Chattanooga.
After the defense stopped GSU again, Charlie Edwards' punt pinned the Mocs at their own six early in the fourth quarter. That was not a deterrent to UTC and the true freshman runner Williams. He opened the drive with 21 yards out to the 27. He followed with 13 more yards out to the 40. Five plays later, Coleman threw a 43-yard laser to Sutherland to make it 35-20.
With the clock ticking late in the game, Mocs punter Mike Hammons (Benton, Tenn.) put the Eagles in perilous position at their own 18 with a 33-yard offering out of bounds. Shaw wasted little time making the game very interesting.
He found Wilcox for 63 yards to the UTC 19. From there, GSU rushed its way in, capped by Shaw running from a yard out to make it 35-27. The Eagles' onside kick was thwarted by illegal touching as they tried to recover before the ball had traveled 10 yards.
The Mocs attempted to ice the game from there, but could not run out the clock, giving GSU the ball with 1:16 left on its own 33. Jordan Tippit (Huntsville, Ala.) ended the Eagles' night by intercepting a deep pass to give Chattanooga the 35-27 win.
UTC forced two turnovers while not yielding one of its own. The Mocs defense was led once again by Ryan Consiglio (Franklin, Tenn.) with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Donald added seven tackles and a sack to go with his forced fumble. Derek Heyden led all tacklers with 12 on the night for GSU. Josh Rowe added eight.
Chattanooga hits the road for another key SoCon matchup next week meeting No. 24 Furman at 2 p.m. Live stats and audio broadcast will be available on GoMocs.com. Fans can also follow the action via the Mocs' twitter staff at twitter.com/GoMocs.
