JONESBOROUGH, Tenn.. --- Another strong round for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team propelled it to a third-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges Golf and Country Club Sunday. Chattanooga tied its low round of the year with a 282.
The 282 total tied the second round effort at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Sept. The six-under par total is the lowest of year in a single round as the Mocs fired a -11 total over the final 36 holes.
"Great, great effort against a good field," said head coach Mark Guhne. "We played solid the first day, but the conditions were very tough. They responded with two great rounds, and I'm so proud of them. This is a young team figuring out its pretty good."
Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) punctuated his first top five finish of the season with a four-under par 68 to follow rounds of 73 and 70. His 211 (-5) was good for a tie for fourth and is his lowest total of the season.
Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) was just as impressive in finishing tied for eighth. Weilguni ended up one shot off Jaeger's pace at four-under par 212. He shot a level par 72 today giving him his first tournament shooting par or better in every round.
Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued his solid play with another top 25 with a tie for 21st at 218 (+2). Bunn got better every round following up his opening 76 with a 72 and today's 70 (-2).
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) ended up tied for 35th with his second straight even-par 72. He shot 223 (+7) for the event, while Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) ended his tourney in 69th shooting 234.
No. 25 Virginia claimed the team title shooting 853 (-10). The Cavaliers shot a consecutive 278 (-10) to blow past Kent State which finished second at 857 (-7). The Mocs were third at 864 (E) three shots clear of No. 24 Wake Forest at 867. Tennessee and Michigan ended up tied for fifth at 873, nine shots behind UTC.
Kent's Mackenzie Hughes closed a strong event with a seven-under par 65. He shot 13 under 203 for his 54 holes winning by seven over Joey Garber (Michigan) and Ben Rusch (Virginia) at 210 (-6). Jaeger tied with three others in fourth at minus five (211).
The Mocs are off until the new year. Next up is defending their title at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate March 7-8 in Aiken, S.C.
