CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Six turnovers by 20th-ranked Chattanooga (5-3/4-2) doomed it to a 49-35 loss to visiting Elon (3-5/2-3) at Finley Stadium Saturday afternoon. The defeat snapped a five-game winning streak for the Mocs, four straight in Southern Conference play.
A.J. Harris was the star of the day for the Phoenix with a career-high 163 yards on 31 rushes and four scores. Harris' scoring runs came from 14, three, 25 and one yards.
It was a great start for UTC as Elon quarterback Scott Riddle fumbled on the opening play of the game. Junior Chris Donald (Huntingdon, Tenn.) recovered on the Elon 23. Five plays later B.J. Coleman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) found Joel Bradford (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the end zone for a 10-yard scoring strike and a 7-0 UTC lead.
It was all Harris from there. Elon scored 28 unanswered points, the first three by Harris as the Phoenix had little trouble moving the ball in the first half. The last score came on a 40-yard pass from Riddle to Sean Jeffcoat with 3:30 remaining in the half.
As it has done all year, Chattanooga answered. Coleman engineered an 11-play, 78 drive finding Marlon
Anthony (Acworth, Ga.) for a touchdown from 25 yards out to make it 28-14 with 1:05 to go in the half.
The Mocs defense could not hold back Elon. Riddle found Jeffcoat again for 57 yards with just 39 seconds left to take a 35-14 halftime advantage. Riddle captained a three-play, 75-yard scoring drive that lasted a mere 21 seconds.
Chattanooga came out of the break firing on all cylinders. The offense took the opening possession 87 yards in 11 plays covering 4:19 to close to 35-21. Bradford and Coleman hooked up again for a seven yard scoring play as the Mocs showed signs of life.
The Mocs' fourth quarter was sparked before the ball was snapped when a UTC fan won a car in an on-field promotion. Jason Browning threw a football 35 yards through the open front window of a Kia Sol to win the car. The contest was sponsored by Kia of Chattanooga and ESPN Radio 105.1 FM.
With the fans still on their feet Coleman found sophomore Brian Sutherland (Smyrna, Ga.) for a 22-yard touchdown toss. That tightened the score to 35-28 with 14:48 to go in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, freshman Chaz Moore (Memphis, Tenn.) made a big hit on Elon returner Kierre Brown which was quickly recovered by junior Sloan Allison (Ooltewah, Tenn.) on the Elon 20. On the very next play, Coleman threw his fifth touchdown pass - fourth different receiver - to tight end Garrett Hughes (Lawrenceburg, Tenn.) knotting the score at 35-all and sending the 11,095 fans in the stadium into a complete frenzy.
But it was not meant to be. After the Mocs defense held the Phoenix to a three-and-out, Coleman's first down pass was intercepted and returned 25 yards for an Elon score and a 42-35 lead. On the next Mocs' play, Coleman was intercepted for a fifth time with a return to the five by Blake Thompson. Harris scored from one yard out two plays later to end the scoring at 49-35.
Coleman completed 33 of 63 passes for 386 yards with five touchdowns offset by the five picks. His 63 attempts are just three shy of Chris Sanders' school record.
Bradford, who came into the game leading the nation with 125 receiving yards per game, caught a game-high 11 passes for 152 yards and two scores. It is the third time this season has caught 10-plus balls for more than 100 yards. Sutherland added six catches for 73 yards, while J.J. Jackson (Marietta, Ga.) paced the ground game with a career-high 62 yards on 15 rushes.
Riddle was 21-29 for 260 yards and two scoring strikes. Jeffcoat had seven catches for a game-high 154 yards, while Aaron Mellete led the Phoenix with nine receptions covering 98 yards.
It was a Halloween game for certain as the two teams combined for 10 turnovers. The Phoenix lost all four fumbles on the day, while the Mocs lost a fumble to go with the five interceptions.
UTC junior Ryan Consiglio (Franklin, Tenn.) paced all tacklers with career-high 16 stops on the afternoon including a sack and recovered fumble. Donald had six tackles with one-and-a-half sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Elon was led defensively by Brandon Wiggins with 12 tackles. Terell Wilson had 10 tackles. Five different Phoenix defenders recorded interceptions.
Chattanooga returns to action at BCS No. 1 Auburn with a 1 p.m. (EDT) scheduled kickoff. Live stats and audio can be found on GoMocs.com.
