Chattanooga Eighth Through 18 Holes at Mercedes-Benz Championship
10/8/2010 8:02:00 PM | Women's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team shot 300 in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Holston Hills Country Club. Chattanooga stands in eighth, three shots ahead of James Madison.
Host Tennessee fired an eight-under par total of 280 and is 11 shots clear of second place. Ole Miss and Arkansas are tied for second at 291 (+3).
UTC started decently before hitting a rough patch in the middle of the round ballooning to 17-over par as a team after making the turn at plus five. The Mocs lost 12 shots in five holes, but they rallied playing the final four holes at seven-under par
Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) led Chattanooga with an even par 72. She leveled her round with a birdie on 15 as her approach ended up just inches from the hole. She is tied for 10th with Coastal Carolina's Jessica Alexander.
Fellow senior Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) got off to a sluggish start and was four over through 15 holes. She closed strong with three straight birdies for her 73 and is tied for 12th. Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) shot 76 including a birdie four on 17 to help the Mocs climb back up the leaderboard.
Freshman Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) each shot 79, but did so in different way. Britt got off to a good start standing at one under through 10. She hit a speed bump however over the next four holes, falling to nine-over par, before birdies at 16 and 17 pulled her back to 79.
Budhram bogeyed her first three holes, but she got back to plus one with back-to-back birdies at five (par five) and six (par four). Those would be her lone birdies on the day, as UTC ended up at 300.
Tennessee's Erica Popson's 67 (-5) leads individually, by two shots, over teammate Nathalie Mansson and Kelli Shean of Arkansas who are at 69 (-3). A quartet of golfers is tied for fourth at 70 (-2).
The Mocs are paired with Furman and James Madison in round two Saturday morning. Budhram starts UTC off No. 1 at 9 a.m., followed by Britt (9:09), Loza (9:18), Wolf (9:27) and de Groot (9:36).
