2010 Southern Conference
Basketball Tournament
No. 3 Chattanooga vs. No. 6 Georgia Southern
March 5, 2010
Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
Opening statement:
"I thought we had a really bad start and battled and played tournament basketball. We took 13 3's tonight and that's a pretty good number. 34% shooting for them is a great tournament number. We're excited but we're not celebrating. We didn't come down to win a game, we came down to win the tournament. We understand how hard it will be, four games in four nights, now we just have to do three in three nights."
On getting 45 points from the bench:
"We watched Chris Early on tape last night playing against Charleston and he was unbelievable. We said it's your choice and tonight he was very good. We're a very talented team. If we can make the right choices and do what we are supposed to do on the glass then everything else will work out."
Junior forward Ridge McKeither:
On the team's performance:
"I just played my role. My point guard Keegan Bell did a great job getting it to the post tonight. It was all about preparation. Coach got us prepared and we just executed."
Sophomore guard Keegan Bell
On the team's post play:
"Our post guys played well. It wasn't just all throwing it in there. They did a great job rebounding and putting stuff back in there. They did a great job tonight and they are going to have to continue to do that for us to be successful during this tournament. I was definitely proud of them. They did a great job."
Georgia Southern Head Coach Charlton Young
Opening statement:
"It definitely went wrong for us in every aspect of the game. They dominated us inside, they dominated us on the glass. But more than those things, UTC played like a team that had been here before and had success in this tournament. You forget when you play them that they are the defending conference tournament champions. We played like guys that had a terrible case of the nerves.
On UTC's points in the paint:
"To have offensive firepower, we have to go small. We still had our chances. If we had made our shots or made our foul shots, we could have been in the game. I think every offensive rebound we gave up was a key play in the game.
On the defensive effort:
"It all goes back to rebounding. We got out-rebounded in the first half 31-10. In the second half, we had to take some chances to try to get back in the ballgame. When you get down, you have to play differently and take chances.
Willie Powers
On the team's performance ...
"We didn't quit, but we didn't do what we had to do. We didn't give ourselves a chance. It's disappointing. It's rough right now. I didn't show up tonight. Big players are supposed to step up in big games and I just couldn't do it tonight.
On the progress his team made this season under a first-year head coach:
"I think we're moving in the right direction. It was just a tough loss today."
