HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- Through 18 holes, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is tied for second at the Southern Conference Championship at Moss Creek Golf Club. Chattanooga stands at 306 just six shots off the pace set by College of Charleston at 300.
Charleston leads the Mocs and UNC Greensboro which matched UTC's 306. Furman is fourth another nine shots back of UTC and UNCG at 315.
Maria Juliana Loza carded a two-over par 74 to lead the Mocs in the first round. She played steady throughout the day parring 15 holes with a birdie as well. She is tied for third with three others at 74.
Yue Xu of Appalachian State is the early leader with a three-under par tally of 69. Charleston's Leigh Whittaker is second at 73 (+1) followed by Loza and three others one more shot back.
Emma de Groot and Moa Duf are tied for seventh with twin 76s for the Mocs. Christine Wolf's 80 places her tied for 28th, as Katie Taylor rounded out the scoring tied for 41st at 88.
Chattanooga kept the score tight throughout the day and looked good through 12 holes at 10-over par. But the counting scores managed one birdie over the final six holes to end the day at +18.
The Mocs tee off No. 1 tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m., led off by Taylor. Chattanooga is paired with UNC Greensboro and College of Charleston.
