FLORENCE, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished seventh at the 74th Southern Conference Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina. Chattanooga shot a final round 298 to finish one shot behind sixth-place College of Charleston.
The Mocs had a 54-hole total of 887 with rounds of 295, 294 and 298. It was a frustrating week of opportunities lost.
"We really hit the ball well this week," said head coach Mark Guhne. "I thought our ball-striking was good enough to compete, but we struggled around the greens. Our putting let us down."
Southern Conference Player of the Year Stephan Jaeger led the way today with a one-over par 73. He was four-over par at the turn, playing the back nine first, before posting three birdies and six pars coming in.
Steven Fox added a 73 as well today. He carded four birdies on the day like Jaeger and was named to the SoCon's All-Freshman team. Fox finished tied for 28th at 223.
Derek Rende became the first Mocs golfer to earn All-SoCon honors all four years of his career today as he led UTC for the week finishing tied for 24th at 221 (+5). Fellow senior J.T. Clendenin ended up tied for 26th at 222 (+6), while Fredrik Qvicker ended the tourney tied for 45th at 231.
Furman claimed this year's championship ending the Mocs' three-year reign atop the league. The Paladins shot 849 beating second-place Georgia Southern (865) by 16 shots. UNC Greensboro finished third at 867.
Furman's Austin Reeves was the individual medalist at nine-under par 207. Elon's Jayson Judy shot the low round of the day with a five-under par 67 to tie for second at minus-four, 212. He was joined at four-under by UNCG's Ryan Heisey and Furman's Garland Ferrell.
Chattanooga now awaits word of its NCAA Regional site in its quest to return to the finals played June 1-6 at The Honors Course in suburban Chattanooga.
