Lady Mocs Get 55-40 Exhibition Win Over Lee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Whitney Hood (Meridian, Miss.) went 6-for-7 in the second half to lead the Lady Mocs to a 55-40 exhibition win over Lee University Tuesday night at the McKenzie Arena.
Hood led all scorers with 20 points and had a team-high seven rebounds in the win. Sophomore Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.) had 10 points and a team-best seven boards while connecting on her only try from the pushed back 3-point line. Junior Kayla Christopher (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) was the third Chattanooga player in double figures on the night with 11 points including three 3-pointers and pulled down five boards.
The Lady Mocs started out slow making just 1-of-11 from the floor, a 3-pointer from Christopher, but found solace at the free throw line going 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Lee's first half scoring came from a trio of 3-pointers and a free throw with Hollie German leading the team in scoring with four points at the break. Kally Eldridge connected on a 3-pointer at the 8:28 mark of the first half to get the Lady Flames to within one at 11-10, but Lee would not score again the remainder of the stanza.
Chattanooga scored five more points over the next five minutes, all on free throws before the offense opened up and went 5-for-7 over the final 3:38 of the half to snare its largest lead of the game 26-10 at the break.
In the second half, Lee stepped up its offense outscoring Chattanooga 30-29. The Lady Flames got off six points immediately in the second half on a pair of 3-pointers from German and Angela Spann to cut Chattanooga's lead to 26-16.
Lee's Madison Lee drained one of her two 3-pointers at the 13:38 mark of the second half and the Lady Flames trailed the Lady Mocs by just four points at 33-29. Chattanooga put up seven straight points to get to a 40-29 lead with scoring coming from Hood, Hall and sophomore Alex Black (Memphis, Tenn.).
Lee would get the score back to within seven at 43-36, but Chattanooga held on and outscored the lady Flames 12-4 over the final eight minutes of the game for the 55-40 win.
The Lady Mocs made just 18-of-53 (34 percent) from the floor and was 4-of-18 from the new 3-point line. Chattanooga went 15-of-19 from the charity stripe, making 11-of-12 in the first half. Chattanooga outrebounded Lee 40-32 and forced 17 turnovers.
Lee went 15-of-50 from the field and was 8-of-26 from beyond the arc. German led the Lady Flames with nine points while Eldridge and Lee each chipped in eight points. Jenna Adams had six points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Mocs open the 2011-12 season Friday, Nov. 11 against UAB at the McKenzie Arena in the preseason WNIT. The winner will face the winner of the Baylor/Howard game played the same night on Sunday, Nov. 13 with the site to be determined. Baylor is ranked first by both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today/ESPN Division I Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
