CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Keegan Bell (Huntsville, Ala.), Ricky Taylor (Brownsville, Tenn.) and Ronrico White (Knoxville, Tenn.) combined for 53 points in the Chattanooga Mocs 82-64 exhibition win over Tennessee Wesleyan. The Mocs overcame a cold shooting performance early to capture the win.
Bell scored 21 of the 53 making seven of nine treys on the night. He also added four assists. Taylor had 17 points on seven-of-11 shooting tying for game-high honors with seven rebounds.
White came off the bench with timely shooting. He scored all 15 of his points on five-of-nine shooting beyond the arc playing 26 minutes in his first collegiate action. He also had five assists with no turnovers playing both the point and off guard.
Quincy Scates led the Bulldogs with 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Matt Harper tossed in 16 as well while grabbing six boards. Chattanooga native E'Jay Ward had a good night at the point for the Bulldogs with 10 assists and two steals.
Tennessee Wesleyan got off to a fast start making its first four shots to go up 10-6 at the 17:09 mark. The lead see-sawed from there with the Bulldogs up four, 23-19, with 4:38 left in the half.
The Mocs took over from there with an 11-0 run powered by eight points from Taylor sandwiching a White three ball. That put UTC up seven, 30-23, a margin it would take into the break, up 35-28.
The Bulldogs battled, but they could not crack that seven-point deficit. Two Lance Stokes (Orlando, Fla.) free throws at 11:02 made it 58-47. The lead would not be inside double digits the rest of the way.
A Bell trey at 2:02 capped a 10-0 run that gave Chattanooga its largest lead, 82-58. Bell's three and two Ricky Taylor baskets surrounded two Jahmal Burroughs (New Orleans, La.) free throws to build the lead to 24. Bell's bucket ended the Mocs' scoring as Scates scored the final six points of the game for the final margin of 82-64.
It was not as crisp a game as head coach John Shulman would have liked. UTC turned the ball over 10 times in the first half before ending with just 12 against 19 assists. The defense was not in mid-season form either allowing TWC to make 50 percent (27-54) from the field.
