Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga at College of Charleston
Charleston, S.C. - TD Arena
Dec. 3, 2011

Head Coach John Shulman
On the game:
"We deserved to win the game. We played hard enough to win the game. Our defense was what I was hoping it would be. We were legit defensively. Some nights we have not been legit defensively and the numbers did not point in our favor. Our defense was what I wanted tonight. If they had to crank threes to beat us and they have two 6-10 players down low, then good for Chattanooga. We played like we should have played the game. We played tonight how we are going to play the rest of the season. This is not our kids fault. This is my fault. I had change how we were guarding ball screens and this and that. We did a really nice job on ball screens and building a wall. We did a really nice job of rebounding the ball. We just made some mental mistakes, once or twice, in a game that could have gone either way. Then, you have your best free throw shooter on the line with seven seconds to go. If he makes the second free throw, then we were fouling. I told the team that if he makes the second free throw, then we are up three and fouling to work down the clock. They are not shooting a three to tie the game. It was just one of those freak misses, you are kind of stunned, and he got by Keegan [Bell] and shot a contested shot. I told them, don't worry about fouling because you have to guard first. It is hard to guard in that situation when they put their head down and go score the ball. I thought we came out in the first overtime and got what we wanted."

On regaining momentum in the overtime after they tied it in regulation:
"I give the team credit because we stuck together. We were phenomenal and emotional at practice yesterday. We came down here with better teams and got our tail ends handed to us. To come down in the mood we came down here to play the game and should have won it. In three months, all that is, is an L. Our kids and I know that we took a big step forward tonight."

On making changes after the Georgia Southern game:
"There is no doubt. We cleaned up ourselves defensively. Now, we can go to work on this. Yesterday was the first concentrated way of guarding ball screens a certain way. Our kids did a really good job. They know what to do and that was just on one day. We walked through everything today in the hotel. We taped down a lane in the meeting room. We were prepared and ready. We got good shots in the first half, but they just did not fall. For whatever reason, the ball was just bouncing out."

On College of Charleston being in the bonus situation early in the second half:
"We have to look at that and figure out why. That is part of this defensive scheme. We will see on the rebounding as we were out-rebounded by three boards and gave up 11 offensive rebounds. Another part of our defense is playing without fouling. In this type of game, there are two little mistakes that we made on the defensive end that costs us the game. They were not the only things, but it is something that we have to get rid of. We will keep on working to correct them."

On the play of Keegan Bell:
"I can't tell you how proud I am of Keegan. He has been phenomenal and led us. He had a triple-double (12/10/10). He played 47 minutes and with tears in his eyes looked at me and said I am sorry about that free throw. What are you supposed to do about that? You give him a hug and tell him how proud of him you are. Everyone is going to get better."

Senior Chris Early
On the intensity shown today:
"I feel like we need to work on having this effort every single game. When we bring this type of effort, we have a lot of success and a few little things kept us from getting the win. If we bring this effort every single game, then we will have a lot more success during the season."

On playing a really good College of Charleston team:
"They are a good team. We know that they are our top competition in this league. We wanted to come into their building and get a W and take that back to Chattanooga, but things just did not turn out that way."

On building from this game:
"We are proud of ourselves in how we played. We must take this and build upon it in preparing for Mercer. We just have to work on playing a more complete game. We just have to work on capping it off."
