Christine Wolf?s Record Round Raises Mocs Lead at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
3/12/2011 5:27:00 PM | Women's Golf
ORANGE PARK, Fla.---Senior Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) vaulted to the top of the leaderboard shooting a school and tournament-record 66 (-6) in the second round of the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational Saturday. Wolf's round included eight birdies as she paced Chattanooga's three-under par 285 and widening of its first round lead.
The Mocs' three-under par total is the second par or better round of the season, and second best all-time behind the final round 283 (-5) shot in this event two years ago. It gives UTC a record two-day total of 581 (+5) which is 13 shots clear of second-place East Carolina.
It was Wolf's day from the start. She opened with birdies on one and two before a bogey on three. She birdied five of seven holes from 5-11 to get to minus six. After a bogey on the par 3 16th, Wolf recorded birdie number eight on the par 5 17th for her 66.
The six-under par 66 breaks the school record of 68 set twice by teammate Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia). It's her second round in the 60s this season after a 69 (-4) at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge 13 days ago. Wolf is at three-under par, 141, and carries a five-shot lead into tomorrow's final round.
She's not alone as five Mocs rank in the top 10, four playing for the team score. Her four-year teammate de Groot is tied for second with three others after a 70 (-2) today, placing her at plus two, 146.
Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) is tied with a trio of golfers for sixth at three-over par 147. She is a mere stroke ahead of teammates Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) at four-over par 148.
Britt, playing as an individual, had the third-best round by a UTC student-athlete today with an even par 72. Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) is tied for 23rd after a plus-two 74 has her at 150 (+6).
Only East Carolina at 13 back is within 20 shots of Chattanooga. UTC leads third-place Campbell by 22 and Miami (Fla.), USF and Illinois by 23.
The Mocs will be led off No. 1 by Duvernay at 9:28 a.m., playing with East Carolina and Campbell. She'll be followed by Budhram (9:36), Loza (9:44), de Groot (9:52) and Wolf (10:00). Britt will play with Valentina SanMiguel (James Madison) and Jordyn Wyzgowski (Illinois State) in the group just ahead of Duvernay at 9:20. Live scoring can be followed at GoMocs.com.
