2011 Southern Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

No. 3 South Furman (21-9) at Chattanooga (16-15)
McKenzie Arena - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Saturday - March 5, 2011

Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
Opening Statement:
"It is really disappointing. We didn't play. We picked a bad time to play poorly, even though we battled. We are a good free throwing shooting team in tight situations, and we an embarrassment tonight. We were awfully quite before the game, and that worried me a little bit. There is a lot of pressure playing at home and we didn't handle it very well. We practiced really well this past week and we did not look like the team in practice. We are just one bad game away from sitting up here second, and that is what happened."

On missed chances:
"We got a chance after a dreadful start to tie the game with a dunk. That is enough said. I don't think Ricky (Taylor) meant to miss the dunk. Big D (Deantre Jefferson) missed an easy two footer off a set play. We missed layups. Even though we moved the ball in the second half, we missed good looks. I think the pressure of performing in here and having to win got to them. We didn't deal with pressure well tonight. I hate it for the team and our fans."

On overemphasis on three players to score:
"No, Ricky Taylor had 41 against Greensboro. They are pretty good players. Furman did a good job of pressuring us. We played poorly and out of character. Furman guarded and their seniors played like they didn't want their season to be over."

On the game:
"We were just out of whack. It felt great being down six at half. We could have been down 22. We battled throughout the game, but missed dunks, layups and free throws. I think we had a really bad night at a bad time."

Junior Guard Keegan Bell
On team's play offensively:
"Disappointing night offensively. We couldn't hit shots. Then I think we did a poor job of getting the ball inside. You are not going to be successful when we don't play inside out. When we would finally made a run, a bloop play would happen or we would miss a shoot that was wide open. It is frustrating, but give credit to Furman, they guarded us well and we came up short."

On the year:
"It has been an up and down year. Starting off hot in the conference, but then struggling. Then winning our division. Winning the North was one of our goals. Another was going to the NCAA Championship Tournament and winning a (Southern conference) championship each year. We came up short, but this will motivate us to get there. We felt like we were a mature team, and could come here and do anything but fell short. Next year we will have a lot of seniors so it will be a senior driven team."

Junior Guard Ricky Taylor
On any pressure on winning tonight:
"I don't think there was too much pressure on us. Coaches did a phenomenal job of preparing us. When our offense doesn't work we tend to get stagnant and rush shots. You have to give credit to Furman for turning up their defensive pressure. Overall we have to continue to get better for next year and fulfill our dreams of going to the NCAA tournament."
