FLORENCE, S.C.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished third in the Southern Conference Championship at the Country Club of South Carolina Tuesday. Chattanooga shot 292 (+4) in the final round to end up at three-over par 867.
Georgia Southern won the title shooting six-under par (282) for its final 18 to total 861 (-3). UNC Greensboro came in second at 866 (+2), just one stroke ahead of the Mocs.
Chattanooga took a four-shot advantage in the final round and kept its advantage until the back nine. The Eagles closed to within two shots through 12 holes playing holes 10-12 at minus four, while the Mocs posted a one under total over the same stretch.
It was at the 15th hole that the round started to get away from the young team. Chattanooga played the final four holes at nine-over par to fall to third.
"We did not play well on the back side either of the last two days," said head coach Mark Guhne. "We had a chance to put the tournament away yesterday and just didn't do it. It's disappointing, but it's something we can learn from.
"This one will sting and that's good," added Guhne. "This team has a lot of golf ahead of it and I believe in each and every one of them. We'll go on to regionals and fight to get back to the finals."
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) rode a hot hand early in the round to a 68 (-4). He birdied six of seven holes on the front side to turn at five under before finishing at minus four for his round. He tied for fourth at 214 (-2).
Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) tied for eighth at 216 (E) for his fourth straight top 10 finish. Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) just missed a top 10 tying for 11th at 217 (+1).
Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) gave the Mocs five golfers in the top 25. Bunn tied for 21st at 221 (+5), while Weilguni tied for 25th at 222 (+6).
Jaeger earned his second straight SoCon Player of the Year award and made his third All-SoCon team in as many years. He is joined on the all-conference team by Fox and Weilguni. Weilguni also scored a place on the all-freshman team with Bunn.
