Kirwa, Berry Nab All-Conference at SoCon Track Finals

| By:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga track teams wrapped up the 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships under a blazing hot Saturday afternoon sun at the newly dedicated Samford University Track complex. With temperatures soaring into the mid-80s, the Mocs finished sixth overall with 42 points and the women wrapped up 10th place.

Juniors Emmanuel Kirwa (Kapsabet, Kenya) and Chris Berry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) earned all-conference honors Saturday. Kirwa, who finished third in the 10,000 meter run Friday night, held off Berry to finish second in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:58.53. Berry, who claimed the 10,000 meter title the night before, followed immediately behind in a time of 14:58.69 for third place.

"They were both hurting after running last night," UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. "Emmanuel's eyes were swollen shut from his allergies. Chris led most of the way and they switched back and forth. They both did a great job."

Senior David Moore (Sarnia, Ontario) wrapped up his collegiate career Saturday afternoon setting a personal record in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.03, placing seventh overall.

Sophomore Blake Olson (Pleasant View, Tenn.) just missed all-conference honors with a fourth-place finish in the in the 400 meter Hurdle finals.  Olson posted a PR time of 54.45 in the event, less than two seconds off the pace time set by Cordell Livingston of Western Carolina.

"That's the second straight year he's just missed all-conference," Gautier said. "He does a really great job and we're looking forward to two more good years from him."

The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.), Lauren Anderson (Greeneville, Tenn.), Sarah Washington (Tullahoma, Tenn.) and anchored by Ashley Hall (Memphis, Tenn.), scored for Chattanooga placing seventh with a time of 51.53.

Under windy conditions, sophomore Lucas Cotter (Colierville, Tenn.) was eighth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:01.82. The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Moore, Olson, freshman Drew Austell (Eads, Tenn.) and Cotter finished fifth with a time of 3:24.81 adding four points to the Mocs total.

On a side note from Friday's competition, freshman Kathryn Stuart severely injured an ankle on the second lap of the 3000 meter Steeplechase and still managed to finish the race, placing ninth overall and was the top Chattanooga runner to finish. She will be evaluated by UTC team doctors upon her return to campus Saturday.

Up next for a select number of Mocs will be several meets around the Southeast possibly including the Tennessee Invitational on May 7 as well as the Clemson qualifier as they look to earn spots in the NCAA Regional set for the end of May.
