BATON ROUGE, La.---Chattanooga golf almost made it a clean sweep as junior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) claimed his first collegiate win, shooting seven-under par at the LSU National Invitational.  The Mocs ended up second, one shot behind No. 9 LSU.

"It was a great performance by Stephan," said head coach Mark Guhne. "He works harder and prepares better than anyone I've ever been around.  He earned this win and almost carried our team to a title."

Jaeger fired an even-par 72 to shoot 209 after rounds of 70 (-2) and 67 (-5) yesterday.  He won by seven shots over Vince India (Iowa) at 216 (E), the seventh-ranked player in the nation.  Minnesota's Donald Constable and LSU's John Peterson tied for third at plus one (217).

The Mocs surged to first place early in the back nine.  After turning at level par, UTC played holes 10-12 at three-under par.  But the counters shot plus seven the rest of the round.

LSU made a big charge itself over the same stretch of holes playing behind Chattanooga.  The Tigers were plus four at the turn before getting their round to even behind Peterson and Andrew Loupe, No. 19 ranked player in the country.

Through 14 holes, LSU was 14-over par for the tournament, one over for its round, but struggled over the final four holes.  With the Mocs in the clubhouse at plus 23, the Tigers came back quickly.  They played that four-hole stretch at eight over holding on for the one-stroke win.

LSU's 886 (+22) was one stroke clear of UTC's 887 (+23).  No. 12 Iowa was third at 893 (+29), while second round leader Michigan was fourth shooting 898 (+34).

Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) had Chattanooga's low round of the day with a two-under par 70.  He ended up tied for 17th at 226 (+10).

Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) tied for 21st after today's 74 (+2) ended his event at 228.  Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) was one shot behind tied for 26th at 229, while Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied for 33rd at 232.

The second-place finish gave the Mocs their third win over a top 15 opponent this week.  On Tuesday, UTC finished second at the Linger Longer Invitational ahead of No. 13 Georgia and No. 15 Stanford.  Today's 292 propelled it past No. 12 Iowa besting the Hawkeyes by six.

Chattanooga heads to the Southern Conference Championship in two weeks.  The championship is played at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence Sunday through Tuesday, April 17-19.
