SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had 25
student-athletes represented on the Academic All-SoCon team for the spring
semester announced on Thursday by the Southern Conference. The squad consisted
of representatives from men's golf, men's tennis, softball, track and field,
women's golf and women's tennis.
To be eligible for Academic All-SoCon,
student-athletes must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average
entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of
their team's competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In
addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24
credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Out of the 13 student-athletes that
maintained a perfect 4.0 g.p.a., Chattanooga had three in seniors David Moore
(Sarnia, Ontario, Canada) and Shelley Taylor (Cohutta, Ga.) and sophomore Morgan Buchanan (Johnson City, Tenn.), all of whom competed on the track and field
team.
The Mocs track and field team led
the way with a total of six men and six women garnering academic honors from the
conference. Women's tennis was second with four followed by women's golf with
three representatives. Men's golf, men's tennis and softball each had three
student-athletes honored.
After 36 student-athletes were named
to the team following the fall campaign, Chattanooga added 25 more in the
spring to increase the total for the 2010-11 academic year to 61
student-athletes earning Academic All-SoCon.
This spring, Chattanooga set a
school record with 33 student-athletes posting a perfect 4.0 g.p.a. across all
sports. The athletic department also set a program-best with a 2.97 cumulative
g.p.a. It was the seventh-straight semester that the Mocs have raised their g.pa.
