The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's official athletics website, GoMocs.com, topped 3,000,000 page views for the first time during the recently competed August 2010 to July 2011 fiscal year. GoMocs.com has broken its annual traffic records in each of the last five years as the Mocs' online brand continues to expand its audience.
GoMocs.com also made a nearly 20% jump in unique visitors, topping the 400,000 mark for the first time. UTC finished with 477,370 individuals visiting the site from Aug. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011.
In 2007, Chattanooga began an online technology partnership with Neulion (formerly JumpTV), one of the largest live streaming companies in the world that currently works with over 200 professional and collegiate sports properties. This partnership included the design, hosting and operations of GoMocs.com and was expanded in 2010 to incorporate ticketing and donations. The result has been tremendous growth in the Mocs' online brand over the last four years.
To understand this growth, a quick overview of the terminology is needed. Traditionally, the term 'hit' was used to measure web traffic. A 'hit' is a file sent to a browser by a web server. One web page can include many files in the form of pictures, ads, etc... As a result, using 'hits' to measure traffic can be misleading and overestimate the exposure of a website.
'Pageviews' have become the more common metric for determining the reach of a website. A pageview is logged each time a visitor views a specific page on a website. One user can rack up many pageviews on a site during any one session. As shown in the graph below, traffic has grown tremendously in this area over the past four years.
In 2007-08, the highest traffic month resulted in 279,416 pageviews, while the monthly average was 206,561. In 2010-11 GoMocs.com averaged 252,065 with a high of 390,340, resulting in a 24% increase. In 2009-10 GoMocs.com had three months in which it recorded 300K or more pageviews. That number jumped to five months in 2010-11.
The unique visitor metric is an even more specific way of measuring traffic. It represents the number of individuals who have visited a site in a specific period of time. The graph below shows GoMocs.com's growth in unique visitors over the last four years.
GoMocs.com's monthly average of unique visitors increased by more than 5,500 compared to last year. Nine of the last 10 quarters, the number of unique visitors has increased over the same quarter the previous year. GoMocs.com also set a record with 61,710 unique visitors in September of 2010.
Potential advertisers should also take notice that the average time a visitor spends on site has increased dramatically over the last four years as well. This year's average of 3:33 is up six seconds from last year, but is up 54 seconds over 2007-08. This means the visitors have ample time to see the advertisements on the site.
The largest reason visitors are spending more time on the site is that video views are up 14%. A record 38,149 videos were viewed on GoMocs.com last year. GoMocs.com created 816 on-demand video and streamed 87 events live. There was also 151 audio events stream live. This averages out to 105 videos watched every day or more than four every hour.
