ROCKY FACE, Ga. --- Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Benni Weilguni (Langelois, Austria) set a school tournament record shooting six-under par 210 at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic. His second-place ties for the best finish by a UTC golfer in the event with Jonathan Hodge (2006-09) who tied for second in 2008 shooting three under leading the Mocs to the title.
"I'm very proud of Benni and his effort," said head coach Mark Guhne. "He played well this weekend, but knows he can play even better, and what he wants to work on to make it happen. He has the potential for a really special year."
As a team, Chattanooga shot 864, level par, after a final round 290 (+2). The Mocs started the day tied for second and ended it in sixth.
"We gave away a lot of shots, six I think, in the last three holes," Guhne continued. "It's disappointing, but we now know how good we can be. We just have to finish."
Weilguni and Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) led UTC on the final day with one-under par 71s. Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) posted a 73 (+1), while Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) rounded out the counting scores with a 75 (+3). Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the drop score of 76 (+4).
"We dropped a 75 or 76 every day," Guhne stated. "That's an acceptable drop number. We also counted a 75 every day, you can't do that against this strong a field. I'm looking forward to seeing us improve against another top field at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 25-27)."
Chattanooga made the turn at even and was plus one entering the very reachable par five 12th hole. The Mocs torched it shooting seven under and was minus eight with six holes to play, just four shots behind Auburn. Over the final six, UTC managed just two birdies (on counting cards) in shooting eight over to finish at level par.
Auburn claimed the title at 13-under par 851. The Tigers out-distanced runner-up Tennessee by five. The Vols ended up at 856 (-8), while Georgia Tech made a furious charge into third shooting 14 under, 274, to finish at 857 (-7). Alabama's Justin Thomas shot seven under 65 Sunday win medalist honors at 10 under, 206.
Weilguni's second-place is the sixth top 10 for the Mocs in five appearances in the event known as "The Masters of Collegiate Golf". He shot rounds of 72, 67 and 71 for his six under total of 210.
Jaeger wound up tied for 14th at one under 211 after a 75 today. He got off to a slow start with three bogeys in six holes. An eagle at 12 and birdie at 15 got him back to even, but he closed with three bogeys. He has two top 5s and four top 15s in four Carpet Capital appearances.
Fox tied for 27th at plus four, 220, bouncing back from an opening round 76. He shot even par over the last 36 holes with a 73 (+1) and today's 71 (-1).
Bunn tied for 35th as his putter let him down for the weekend shooting seven over (223). He started with a 72 (E) on Friday before a 75 and 76 over the last 36. If a few of his birdie putts dropped that were so agonizingly close, and his tourney has a much different spin.
Robb was just a shot behind Bunn at 224 (+8), tying for 39th. His nine birdies for the week was second only to Weilguni's 12 for the Mocs.
UTC is off until Sept. 25-27 when it tees it up at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The event is played at Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. Live scoring will be available on GoMocs.com.
