WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The 22nd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs men's
golf team finished fourth at the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of
Landfall. UTC shot 15-over par 879 over the 54-hole, two-day event.
Junior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) shot 69 (-3) to
wind up at one-under par 215. It's his third straight final round in the 60s.
"Fox had a very solid tournament," said head coach Mark
Guhne. "I was very pleased with our top three to be honest with you.
"It was a disappointing finish to be truthful," he added.
"We need to be more consistent throughout the lineup. The good news is I know
we have the talent and depth for that to happen."
The tie for seventh marked back-to-back top 10s for Fox.
He is 11-under par over his last seven rounds (126 holes).
Senior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) and freshman Liam
Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) had good finishes for the Mocs. Jaeger ended up
10th, while Johnston had his best collegiate finish in 17th.
Jaeger ended his tourney with a three-over par 75 for a
one-over par 217. It was his fifth consecutive top 10 (in six events) and his
75 ties for his highest 18-hole score. He is 13 under for the season.
Johnston's 221 (+5) bested his best 54-hole total by five
shots. It's his first top 20 and his final round 70 (-2) is the low round of
his three-tournament career.
Sophomores Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Benni
Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) rounded out the team scoring. Robb tied for 32nd
at 226 (+10), while Weilguni struggled to a total of 237 (+21).
East Carolina was the team winner with an even-par 864. The
Pirates shot 286 (-2) to end up nine shots ahead of second-place Wake Forest
(873). South Carolina was third at 875, four shots ahead of the Mocs at 879.
Chattanooga heads back to the tee next week at the
Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. It's played at Palmetto Golf Club in
Aiken, S.C., March 5-6. UTC has won two of its last three visits to Palmetto.
