GREENSBORO, N.C.--- Wes Gosselin fired a final round 68 today to lead the Chattanooga Mocs to a third-place finish in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. His 4 under round paced the Mocs to an even-par 288. That was the second-best team score of the day.
“I think these guys are maturing,” coach Mark Guhne said. “There's a certain amount of toughness that reminds me of some of our past teams. They keep battling trying to beat everybody they can beat whether it's to finish first or third.
“This is a great way to end the fall.”
Gosselin's 68 ties for his best tally of the season. It included a stretch of five straight birdies from 12 through 17, which were his seventh through 12th holes after starting on No. 6 in a shotgun start. His 2-over par 218 tied him for 12th, which is his best finish in a team event.
“Wes has always worked really, really hard,” Guhne continued. “He's putting great right now and made great improvements. It's made a big difference for him. Today he hit the first 12 or 13 greens in a row. It's good to see it all come together for him.”
Andrew Weathers was the story of the tournament for the Scenic City lads. He got his first career top 5 tying for fifth at 2 under. He set new season bests for 36 (139) and 54-hole (214) totals.
“He played two great rounds yesterday,” Guhne added. “Today he started on two of the hardest holes on the golf course. He got off to a tough start, but really brought it back. I'm very encouraged what he's been able to accomplish this semester. To post five par or better rounds in his first semester is impressive.”
Weathers' final round 75 was today's drop score. Ewan Scott shot an even-par 72 today in support of Gosselin's 68. The team score of 288 was rounded out by Liam Johnston and Kory Webb with twin 74's. Johnston joined Weathers and Gosselin in the top 20 tying for 17th at 220.
No. 21 North Carolina won the event by 12 shots with a 15-under par 849. Virginia Tech was second, 11 clear of Chattanooga at 861. South Alabama was fourth, four behind the Mocs with Mercer fifth another two strokes back at 878.
This concludes the Mocs fall slate. The squad returns to action March 2-3 at the Davidson College Invitational.
