Postgame Quotes vs. VMI - Oct. 4, 2014

| By:

Head Coach Russ Huesman
Thoughts on the game
“Today was a good win.  Our guys competed really well today.  I think VMI has excellent coaches and some good players.  I wish VMI the best, and I do believe they will play well in the league. They played hard, but it was a good win for us.”

Thoughts on Alphonso Stewart
“Alphonso is a good player.  We previously talked about it to give him the ball, because we will need him this season.  In the second half, we gave him the ball to see what all he can do with it. For the first half we wanted to see him catch a football, but for the second half our focus was on Stewart's skills.  All together we did a nice job.”

Thoughts on Derrick Craine
“He is a good player.  He knows how to run the ball hard.  He does everything from tackles to kic off recovery.  He is a special player. We love him.”

Thoughts on Faysal Shafaat's play
“He looked better than he did in the first couple of games. He is our dangerous weapon now that he is healthy.”

Thoughts on the defense
“The defense did a great job today.  They usually average 298 (passing) yards per game.  So that is well below their average.  Today was just a good day, and everyone was able to play today.”

Josh Freeman, defensive lineman, junior
Thoughts on the road to SoCon Championship
“We have to keep going. It was a great way to end the night, but all focus goes to next week.  We just have to keep trucking.”

Thoughts on playing at Tennessee next week
“It'll be great.  You can't beat the atmosphere.  It'll be loud, and it'll be fun.”

Thoughts on the success of the defensive line as a unit
We all want to contribute, go after the quarterback and make a lot of plays. I feel like we're doing a good job of doing that.”

Jacob Huesman, quarterback, junior
Thoughts on the defense
“I give big-time credit to the defense.  Those guys come to play every week no matter who we're playing.  I'm proud of those guys.”

Thoughts on moving Corey Levin over to left guard
I think we found our winning combination moving Cory to guard and Brandon Morgan to the right where he's more comfortable.  That's where he's played the majority of his games.  I think we finally found the combination that works the best there.”

Thoughts on players stepping up
Alphonso Stewart made some really nice plays.  I was proud of him today.  He made some really nice catches.  The young running backs run so hard.  I'm proud of those guys.  They hit the hole running with complete disregard for their bodies.”

Faysal Shafaat, tight end, senior

Thoughts on the game
“I'm really proud of Jacob Huesman and the offensive line.  They did a terrific job.  I'm especially proud of the young guys today.  C.J. Board got his first career touchdown today.  They looked really sharp today.”

Thoughts on his performance
“My goal coming in is just to play and execute whatever play we run. Whether it's a run play, protection, or running routes, good things will come if you just keep playing.  That's what happened today.”

Thoughts on competing with Tennessee next week
“It's the next game of the season and we're a competitive group.  It's the University of Tennessee. They're an SEC team, but we feel we can compete with anyone on our schedule. That's exactly what we're going to go out and do.”
