WBB Postgame Quotes - Villanova - Nov. 14, 2014

Chattanooga Head Coach Jim Foster
On forcing Villanova to take a lot of shots
“In the first half they took a lot of shots we would have liked them to have taken - shots off the bounce. When people are taking jump shots off the dribble you're playing good defense.  When they're getting lay-ups and making threes, you're in trouble.”

On Chattanooga's missed chances
“We had a lot of shots rim. We were right there. It doesn't always go in. A young team trying to figure out who your go-to is going to be in a situation where the other team is keeping a couple of our players on the bench that can score because they're not playing defense. So we put our best defensive players out there, and sometimes your best defensive players struggle to score.”

On Chelsey Shumpert's limited play
“I thought Chelsey started to be taken advantage of defensively. Ka'Vonne is a very versatile player and gives us a lot of depth at that position, so we played her at the point.  So with bigger and more experience. You have a senior who's played a lot of big games out there. She takes care of the ball and does her job defensively.”

Thoughts on the team's performance
“Harry is a terrific coach. They have a great scheme for their personnel. Anytime you can beat a team like them, it's a good building block. It's a good start.”

Thought's on Villanova's run and if it was expected
“Oh sure, they're a good team. They won 23 games last year. They're picked to finish second by some and third by others in the Big East. That's a quality basketball team.”

Jasmine Joyner, forward, sophomore
Where those the two biggest free throws in your life?
“Those were the two biggest free throws of my life. My heart was pounding the whole time. I couldn't even hear the crowd. The crowd was gone because that's how hard and fast my heart was beating. I knew I had to do it for my team. I knew I had to make both of them. Coach was telling me what to do if I missed one and made the other, but I said I had to make both of them.  We had to win the game because of how hard we played out there.”

How are you adapting to a larger role on this year's team?
“I don't want to say it's lots of pressure, but I have to step it up big time. Six minutes into the first half, I remember I was out of breath. I was wheezing. I was looking at Coach Foster, and he said to just put your big-girl pants on. You have to go out there and you just have to play. It's hard because we had big Ashlyn and Faith there last year. Ashlyn, she can play good back post, and Faith can shoot an amazing shot. I was mostly the defensive post. I would go out there and play defense and block.  I have to step it up on both sides of the court.”

Thoughts on South Florida
“They're more aggressive. Instead of just shooting three's they can drive it and post up. They're more of an inside game. We kind of focused on the defense around the three because that was a really good three-point shooter. Next game we just have to play defense all the way - three points, posting up, in the paint, shots, everything.”

Moses Johnson, guard, sophomore
How are you adapting to a larger role on this year's team?
“Putting in the work with my team previously to getting on the court helps me. We practice everything and drill everything, so when it comes to getting on the court I just try to do my best. I put forth as much effort as I can to try and help my team win.”

How much of a relief is it to get this win?
“It's a blessing. There were a lot of sighs of relief. We know we have to get it past us, and the next game is Sunday so we have to look forward to that and get prepared for it.”

Thoughts on 19 points off of turnovers.
“It helps a lot. Defense plays a big role in our team. Coach Foster is really big about defense. The more we're aggressive on defense, it initiates our offense. It plays a huge role when it comes to our team. We kind of feed off of it.”

Villanova Head Coach Harry Perretta
Thoughts on the game
“I thought the game went the way I thought it was going to go. We were playing a lot of inexperienced players and they have to learn how to play. They just don't really know yet. We're playing against a team on the road who's a good team at home. I told the kids before the game that they know they have to be able to learn how to play. It's hard to learn how to play at practice. You can practice all you want, but it's so much different than a game. The timing of our offense was totally disrupted today because their defense was just aggressive. Even though we practice against it, it's so much different when you practice against something and then you actually see it for the first time.”

Thoughts on Villanova's offense
“I think the timing of our offense was off. They did that. It wasn't like it was just off. It was off because of their defense. In the second half I thought we began to play better late in the game, and our offense started to look a lot better late in the game because we were executing it quicker. That's something we do in practice. It's something you have to learn, and you have to kind of learn it on your own. I thought we got enough shots to have a chance to win. The problem is we can't get 50 points. If you can't get 50, you're not going to win a lot of games. That's the bottom line. Especially on the road you basically have no chance to win. I thought it was a really good game for us to learn how to play, and hopefully we can get better as we go along.”

Thoughts on turnovers
“Another thing that killed us today was we had 13 turnovers in the first half.  We led the country the last couple of years in the least amount of turnovers and we had 13 in the first half tonight.  We only averaged eight as a team last year. It shows you the difference between experience and inexperience. “
