Chattanooga heavyweight Dawson Peck is the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Feb. 12-18, the league office announced today.
Peck went 2-0 and pinned a top-20 opponent on the week as the Mocs fell to a pair of ranked teams at the NWCA National Duals in Columbus, Ohio.
Against Evan Knutson of No. 20 North Dakota State on Sunday, Peck earned an 8-2 decision in 19th-ranked Chattanooga's 28-10 loss.
The following day, the Virginia Tech transfer pinned former teammate Ty Walz, ranked 16th nationally, in just 2:10. Chattanooga dropped the narrow 22-17 decision to the 16th-ranked Hokies in its second top-20 showdown in as many days.
Knutson is ranked 26th in the NCAA RPI at heavyweight, while Walz checks in at No. 22.
Peck, a freshman from Chambersburg, Pa., is 11-1 for the Mocs since transferring from Virginia Tech in January. He cracked the individual top-20 for the first time this week, checking in a No. 20 in TheOpenMat.com Division I Rankings.
Chattanooga (15-7, 6-0 SoCon), which has already secured at least a share of the SoCon regular-season title, can claim it outright when it takes on VMI in Lexington, Va., on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Mocs are in the top-25 for the sixth week in a row, dropping to No. 24 in the latest USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. Juniors Corey Mock (No. 8 – 165) and Nick Soto (No. 16 – 133) are the other two individuals ranked in the top-20 for Chattanooga.
