FRANKLIN, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team finished seventh in a strong field at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club. Freshman Megan Woods led the way with her first career par or better round turning in level-par 72.
“She came out with a different mentality today,” coach Colette Murray stated. “Sometimes when you try too hard, it's detrimental. Her goal was just to go out and play golf.
“She relaxed and played well.”
The team bested three teams that qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championship (Alabama, Michigan State & Tulane), as well as two, Alabama and Clemson, which finished among the top 15 in the rankings at No. 10 and 14, respectively, for 2013-14.
“It was a good result,” Murray noted. “It could have been better, but we are still developing as a team right now. It's all positive, and we are moving in the right direction.”
Emily McLennan tied for 13th for her second straight top 15 finish to open the season. She shot 4 over for her 54 holes ending up at 220. That was seven clear of Isabella Loza and Agathe Sauzon who tied for 39th at 227. Sarah Dolmovich completed the event at 229, while Woods shot 233.
The Commodores won their own event behind medalist Jenny Hahn who shot 5-under 211. Vandy's even par as a team was 11 better than runner-up LSU (875). Mississippi State was third at 880.
The Mocs are off until next month when the squad travels north to Iowa. For the second year in a row, and third time overall, the squad is entered in the Diane Thomason Invitational, October 4-5, hosted by Iowa at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
