CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---If the opening act is any indication, redshirt freshman Andrew Weathers has quite the show for Chattanooga Mocs men's golf fans. He opened with a 5-under par 67, which is tied for the lead at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate.

His first collegiate round included eight birdies, one off the tournament record. Head Coach Mark Guhne summed it up with a single word.

“Special,” Guhne smiled. “To play like that in your first college round against a field like this one…not sure there is a better way to say it. I'm proud of the way he carried us in round one.”

The field includes 2014 NCAA National Champion Alabama. Ten of the 14 teams hail from either the SEC or ACC.

Weathers' splendid debut paced the Mocs to a 3-over par 291. The squad is tied for seventh with South Carolina. The duo is two ahead of Georgia Tech, three clear of Auburn and five shots in front of Tennessee in 11th.

“Having Daisy (volunteer assistant David McKenna) on the bag today really helped me stay relaxed,” Weathers stated. “I couldn't have started any better (two birdies). I didn't want to get ahead of myself, I just wanted to play each shot one at a time.”

Sophomores Ewan Scott turned in an even-par 72. He was solid throughout the day with two birdies and 14 pars, offsetting his two bogeys. Senior Liam Johnston and sophomore Wes Gosselin each had 4-over par 76's to round out the counting cards. Sophomore Zac Stolz posted the drop score with an 81.

“We had a pretty good today,” Weathers added. “We're tied for seventh. I know we have a few guys wishing they had a shot or two back today, but we'll come back in the morning looking to improve on that.”

Moving day is tomorrow as Chattanooga begins its day at 7:30 a.m. Stolz leads off No. 1 followed by Gosselin (7:39), Johnston (7:48), Scott (7:57 and Weathers (8:06). The Mocs are paired with the Gamecocks and Yellow Jackets.
